Following my review of the Moon Dough cash register and shopping set I recently wrote, I wanted to do a review on the first piece we bought which introduced us to this curious stuff. The mini ice cream play set. Our daughter is a big fan of ice cream, as I'm sure many two year olds are and I knew this would be a toy she'd enjoy playing with. First impressions I wasn't sure what to expect when I first opened the bag but I was under the impression that it was a sort of dry plasticine that you can mould. In the set was also the plastic purple scoop and an ice cream cone also made of plastic. In use The dough first comes sealed in a clear plastic bag but it is immediately ready to use. It comes in different colours but this one was a pinky red colour (we've since had purple, yellow and white to play with - it all eventually goes up the vacuum cleaner!). My daughter soon got the hang of it and we were having great fun making round scoops of moon dough and squishing them on the top of the ice cream cone. She needed reminding it was a toy though and not to eat it. My thoughts The moon dough is clean and dry and doesn't stain clothing but it does get up my fingernails and can stain your fingers a little bit if it's a dark colour. The bits from it get everywhere too and it a bit difficult to collect it all in so I do the best I can to get the bigger bits together and then get out the vacuum cleaner and hose all the bits in. It's so cheap it doesn't really matter that it diminishes with each play as we can always buy some more. our collection of moulds grows with each purchase too. Price I have mentioned that it is cheap and I have seen it online but the best bargain was in store when I bought it from poundland. I have since bought another set to get some more of the dough in a different colour and this one came with a pot that is good to store the dough in when not in use and the moulds were in the lid of a monkey and a banana. Final word This is fun and not messy in terms of it is easy to clear up if you have a vacuum handy so I tend to get the set out prior to a clean rather than afterwards. With regards to this set specifically, the quality is great for a pound and the accessories live on long after we lost all the dough. The only negative is that the dough can get a bit compacted in the cone but don't let that put you off as you can poke it out with a pen lid quite easily. The dough is easy to shape and feels quite soft and silky to the touch. It is only suitable for over threes though so I make sure I supervise her when in play.
