Advantages: lots of activities and fun things to do
Disadvantages: Could do with an age guide!
I have two little girls who absolutely adore all of the Disney Princesses (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc), so they were really delighted when they received the Disney Princess Tin as a present for Christmas. I have to say I was surprised when they unwrapped it, because having seen and felt the package, I was convinced it was yet another tin of biscuits - so it was a huge relief to discover all of these Disney items in a tin instead!!
The tin contains two full colour story books, three activity books, a set of felt pens, some stencils and some stickers - a real treasure trove for little girls who love Disney princesses and art! The tin itself is very attractive too - pink in colour with pictures of all the princesses embossed on the lid. They couldn't wait to open it and spill out all its contents!
Everything within the box is lovely too. The first story book is the Disney Princess Treasury. this has a compilation of stories about Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Cinderella, Snow White and The Little Mermaid. These are not the actual stories which are known so well through the Disney films - but very entertaining 'spin offs'! My daughters enjoy all five of these particularly because they have the same drawings of the characters they would see in the films. I like them because they are just the right length story to read just before bedtime!
The other story book is entitled Sweethearts in the Snow and this one just has two stories - one about Jasmine from Aladdin and one about Belle from Beauty and the Beast. These are just as enjoyable and we like them for all the same reasons but they could have just as easily been all part of the larger book. My cynical mind tends to think that it was more appealing to advertise it with two story books rather than just one!
My elder daughter in particular really loves the craft activity books. There are three of these and at the moment both girls are of an age when they need sitting with if they are to get the most out of these. My four and a half year old soon got the hang of the sticker book though which have a number of stitches that need to be attached to various pages according to themes. There is a 'Little Mermaid' page which gets them to think about opposites and Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty Pages where they have objects to count and then attach the correct number stickers. Other pages just have parts of the pictures to fill in - but whatever the activity most little children love stickers so this really is a winner!
There is a smaller activity book which has things like word searches, word puzzles and mazes. Most of these are far beyond the reach of pre school children (especially the ones requiring reading skills) so I think I shall probably end up putting this book away ready to be brought out at a later stage. (Interestingly, I can't find an age guide any where on the tin, but my guess would be about age six or seven as the optimum age for both enjoyment and participation.)
There is also a craft activity book and this has suggestions of things that children can make and instructions to follow. These include things like the Fairy Godmother's wand or Princess Cinderella's Magic Coach Box. These are all quite simple to make but you will need to be on the look out for various items such as small boxes, aluminum foil, plastic drinking straws, etc. All in all these are a lot of fun and contain some good ideas for me to use when the weather is particularly horrible and we can't get out!
Along with the pens, stencils and some more sticker sheets there really is a lot to be explored in this tin. Although on Amazon, the normal price is £9.99 at the moment it is being sold for £5.49 which is really very good value and would make an ideal birthday present.
Incidentally, there are other Disney tins such as Power Rangers which have similar contents and would obviously be much more suitable for boys.
