My little girl is peppa pig mad so when I came across this secret message set for just £2 on Amazon I knew she would love it combining her favourite character with her love of drawing has to be a hit.
In the set you receive 6 pens 4 are like normal colouring pens and 2 pens have the white tip and are what make this set as fun as these are the secret messages pens. Also included is a small notepad that has plain paper inside but on the outside has a peppa pig casing to give it that peppa pig look. The pens each come in a different colour red, blue, yellow and green and any one of these can be used to reveal the secret pens ink so little one does have lots of choice.
The pens also have peppa pig charactering over them and they are rather chunky felt tip pens. Removing the lid shows the pen top itself is rather chunky too allowing little one to provide lots of art to a piece of paper with little effort. My little girl has also used the coloured markers as just normal colouring pens and they work fantastically as they have such a thick tip.
The idea of this set is too write or draw with one of the secret pens and then you simply draw over this message with any of the coloured pens to reveal the secret message that was written underneath. This amazes my daughter and she filled up the whole booklet with lovely smiley faces and her attempt at writing just to see them be revealed by the colour pens.
This works very well you can only see a faint line on the paper when written with the secret message pen and then as soon as the colour comes into contact with the message it beings to show up clearly.
My little girl soon filled up the pad and we then used the pens on normal a4 paper and they worked just as well on this so they can be continued in use when the pad runs out. £ of the colour pens and 1 of the secret message pens still work now 3 months later but unfortunately she decided to leave the lids of 2 of the pens and within 3 hours they had completely dried out and were unusable.
This pen actually ended up being used to draw on my sons hands and I was a little worried as normally it is a nightmare to get felt tip of children but I am pleased to say it came of his skin and his clothes with hardly any effort so definitely child safe.
Over all we think this set is fantastic it does not cost a lot and yet provides hours of fun for little one and the fun does not run out unless you leave the lids off. I think it is great they provide 2 secret message pens and 4 revealers as this means that it can be either shared like it has done between my children. Also this means that if one of the pens should stop working the whole set is not ruined which we have learned through experience I would highly recommend this set. It is recommended from age 3 years plus which I would say is correct as otherwise the pen gets everywhere yet another experience we learned through our 20 month old son.
On a recent trip to Peppa Pig world, my daughter was let loose in the gift shop at the end of our outing. She was on a limited pocket money spend of just £3, but amazingly she found this secret message set that she really wanted for just the right price.
With a love of all things drawing and craft, as well as Peppa Pig, this little set was bound to be a hit with her from the start.
Included in the packet was a slimline notepad, four different coloured chunky felt tip pens and two secret message pens.
Without the attraction of being able to create secret messages then this set really wouldn't be worth more than a pound, but to be able to create something secret and fun, makes it more intriguing.
To use the set is very simple. A drawing or message is written in the special pen before being coloured over with one of the coloured pens.
My daughter found this very amusing and spent ages drawing little designs to make them magically appear in front of our eyes.
The quality of the set was surprisingly good. I didn't expect much for the price, especially when the price had been inflated due to the venue it was purchased from. It's standard price from the high street is just £2.
Each pen is a decent thickness and quite chunky for the child to hold. The tips are quite thick and chunky as well. I would perhaps think they would be better if the secret pen nib was a little slimmer and then the coloured pens would cover and reveal the message easier in a smaller area. The pens are also adorned in Peppa Pig slogans and pictures which makes them stand out a little better.
I have found that after continuous use, the coloured pens have started to almost fray from the nib. I wondered if this was due to my daughter being heavy handed but in actual fact I think it is just the pens as I have watched how hard she presses with them.
The secret message pen is made from something different as it is lasting a lot longer.
The notepad that is included has approximately fifty pages. I was happy with this as apart from it's character cover design it really was a standard notepad that you could pick up anywhere for not a lot of money.
I have found the set to provide decent amusement for my daughter which made it value for money for us. Overall however I'm not sure that it would be well received if it was meant for anything more than a pocket money toy.
