The blossom flower cutters are one of my favourite pieces of equipment in my overflowing sugarcraft box. Although I own many cutters and shapers, the blossom cutters are one of the most versatile cutters you can use as a cake decorator. I seem to remember buying mine from Lakeland, as I needed them for something in particular, but if I'd had time I would have shopped around and got them cheaper online. They currently retail at around £8 on Amazon, and this gets you a set of three different sized cutters.
They come in a little round plastic container (I was tempted to say box but I guess it's not a box if it's not square!), with a lid which slots on top to keep them in place, and foam padding to protect them. I still store mine in this container as it's easier to spot them this way, than rummaging round all my other random equipment trying to find them. It also protects them from getting knocked in my storage box.
The cutters are "plunge" cutters, which means that you use the plunger on top to cut out the shape, and in theory this helps you to release the shape once it's been cut out. This is really useful when cutting out small fiddly shapes such as these, otherwise you'd spend ages trying to get the fondant out from the cutter and it'd look like the cat's attacked it by the time it makes it onto your cake. I've had these a couple of years and the spring mechanism on the plungers work as well now as it did when I bought the cutters. They are also metal, so this makes them pretty sturdy compared to the plastic cutters.
The cutters are suitable for using with fondant, flowerpaste or petal paste. It is best not to have the paste too thin or too thick, but instead just a few millimetres to get the right look. If the fondant is too thin it will rip when you try to extract the blossom, and likewise too thick and it will get stuck and look a bit untidy when released.
The cutters are blossom shaped, which is really useful if you're decorating a cake and need to add some generic flowers to a scene. I have used these cutters to make blossom to add to a garden scene, to scatter around the board, to decorate an entire tier in different shades and shapes of blossom, and I've even used it as a floral hairpiece on a fondant bear! They are very versatile, and can create different effects by mixing up the sizes and colours. For example, I use them to spell out names or numbers when doing birthday cakes, as it's a more interesting way to display these details than just piping them. They also come in handy for disguising any icing mishaps, making these cutters ideal for amateur cake decorators.
The only downside of these cutters for me is that they're not as easy to clean as most cutters, as it's difficult to get to the inside mechanism if there's any fondant stuck inside. I tend to find soapy water does the trick, but sometimes if I'm cutting out lots of blossoms (as I recently did for a square cake I was completely covering in them!), the inside needs cleaning regularly or the shape doesn't cut quite as cleanly and this gives a bit of an untidy finish.
Overall, I would highly recommend these, as they are good quality and will come in handy for amateurs and experienced cake decorators.
