“ Brand: Sculpey Clay / Type: Clay / Age: 6 Years+ „
Having recently taken an interest in making my own polymer clay beads, I have been stocking up on my sculpey clay. Having a voucher for amazon that needed to be used, I decided to purchase this sculpey clay babies set, for £9.99 on the amazon website.
I know that it is aimed at children, in fact it states on the box, that it is for ages 8 and up, however, my purchase was really for the coloured clay. It is expensive to purchase by itself in my local craft store, plus this clay babies set comes with a few extra bits and bobs.
On the packaging it states that is a product to 'shape & bake, then wear and share'. and yes it would be an ideal gift for an older child, who is interested in making things, and is good with their hands.
According to the box. there is enough material inside to create 11 clay babies of various designs including a black bear. buny, dog, kitty, ducky, butterfly, frog, ladybugteddy bear, pig, dinosaur, and even name tags for stuffed animals.
The box comes with 8 bars of scupley superflex clay, and I have to admit that I found it muct easier to work with than the sculpey clay that I buy in my local craft shop. It also comes with a modelling tool, a colourful instruction booklet and some accessories, namely: a necklace cord, pin bars and magnets.
The colourful instruction booklet that comes with the clay, really is excellent. It demonstates in detail how to put together the 'clay baby, and although I wasn't using the clay for that purpose, I would be very confident that a child of 8 or older would have no problem in making some of these clay babies. The instruction booklet also details how to bake the clay babies in the oven, with temperatures per 6mm given.
According to the box, scupley products were voted one of the 50 best toys on the American market in an independent toy test, so it ranks fairly highly in terms of a decent gift/toy for a growing child.
There is a clear warning however on the box, that this product contains metal parts and therefore if they come in contact with a mtel onject inside the human body, it can lead to fatal consequences.
All in all, I think this is a brilliant product. I was simply looking for some extra sculpey clay to make some beads for a necklace, however if I had a primary school aged child, it is definitely a present that I would consider giving to them, especially, as I said, if they are interested in making things and are good with their hands, as some of the clay babies, would require concentration and nimble fingers. Children who are unlikely to concentrate for a long time, would probably not enjoy this, as it does require some time to put together and then bake. I also think that is good value for money, since you receive 8 bars of sculpey clay as well as other accessories.
An idea for Christmas!
