For anyone that has not seen the numerous adverts this is sand which binds together like playdoh.
Due to the clever advertising my daughter requested we but her some of this. We did and at first thought it was great. It did exactly
what it said and she was able to make a little petshop with the equipment that was supplied. However, she did find it hard to make
things without the stencils provided as the stuff does not stick that well and cannot be rolled etc like play doh.
What they do fail to tell you is that this stuff makes such a mess!
Unlike Play doh this stuff does not always stick together. Our daughter had a friend over and managed to empty this out all over our
playroom. It has stained the wall, the carpet, clothing. It stains much worse than play doh does!
If you do wish to buy this then it is something that needs to be strictly supervised and not to expect too much.
For the price I would rather have purchased a load of play doh - much safer and alot more can be done with it.
Moon sand is one of those childrens products you either love or hate. I bought this Moon Sand set for my daughter a couple of years ago and she loved it instantly and it is often played with in my house.
Moon Sand is clean, mouldable sand that never dries out and is perfect for creative, young minds. Children can use it again and again for sculpting and moulding
This set is designed so that your child can create their own pet shop with mouldable pets and play characters. They can decorate the shop inside and out and then play with your Moon Sand creations. This is one of the smaller moon sand sets which are available and retails around the £10 mark.
The set includes a cat, a dog and pet shop owner moulds, pet shop, themed play mat and 2 colours of Moon Sand.
The concept behind Moon Sand is simple, it's the same as normal sand, you simple make shapes. The benefit of Moon Sand over normal sand is although it feels completely dry it has the consistency of wet sand so it easily moulds into shapes and retains those shapes until you destroy them.
As with other sand the major downside is the mess. If you have a messy four year old like I do then you will find it gets just about everywhere but the huge benefit of this and a real selling point for me is unlike normal sand which is fine grains and seems to get everywhere this remains clumped together to an extent and simply hoovers up.
My little girl loves these sets and we have since bought several more for her.
After seeing an advert for moon sand my daughter had to have some. I decided to wait until her birthday and then get her a large set as I found that they were rather expensive. I managed to get her a large castle one that I found in the entertainer for half price for £10 which I was really happy with so I bought her a load of extra sand in different colours at £5 each as well as other bits and bobs. I was very exited and could not wait to see her little face when she opened her presents.
It was her birthday party yesterday and she had a wonderful time. She received loads of presents. We waited until we got home until she opened them. My sister in law's present was opened first. I was so disappointed to find that she had bought her a moon sand set. I wanted to surprise my daughter with her moon sand that I had bought her but with opening this present and seeing her excitement I knew she would not be that bothered now as she would have already had some. The play set was the moon sand pet shop. I already know that these are £10 after looking for moon sand in the past. My daughter was over the moon (haha) she opened it straight away.
Inside the set contained two small bags of sand, a play mat, a little spade and 3 molds ( one of a little girl the other of a dog and cat) I was disappointed to find that the set did not contain any little containers to put the sand after it had been opened and we would have no resort to using food bags.
The aim to moon sand is that is like play dough but its sand and it never dries out. This is what attracted me to this product in the first place. My daughter has always played with play dough and this sounded ideal. Moon sand comes in loads of different bright colours and even glitter onces can be purchased.
I let my daughter use the dining room table to play with her moon sand as it was wet outdoors. I put a sheet down and she started to play. The moon sand got everywhere. It was all over the carpet, all over her clothes. I could not believe how messy this product was. My first impressions were bad. We both tried to make the molds but the sand would just not stick together and the characters just crumbled as soon as we took them from their molds. There was no way that the sand would stay in place.
I am quite angry and upset to be honest as my daughter has so looked forward to receiving this product and I have already purchased a lot of moon sand to have on her actual birthday and I already know its rubbish. Its not a case of sending it back to get a refund either as the place I got it from was miles away and would mean me traveling. The set I did buy does have a storage solution though so at least thats better than this one. I might just add a little water to the moon sand we have and see how that goes.
Avoid this product
For a while now, no visit to the toy shop has been complete without my 4 year old son insisting on going to 'just look' at the Moon Sand. I have never considered myself to be a mean mummy, but I could not personally justify spending £9.99 on a pot of sand and a few plastic moulds. However, Christmas was on its way and I had been asked the standard annual question by an elderly aunt: "What do you think I should get him for Christmas this year?" It wasn't long before I thought of an ideal present - Moon Sand!
There are several Moon Sand sets on the market at the moment, all based on various themes including: Monster Truck Set, Diggin' for Dinos, Pet Shop and Ice Cream Sundae, all priced at £9.99. However, there are a few larger sets available which are selling in the region of between £14.99 and 24.99. Single tubs of sand are also available at £3.99 each, but do not include any of the moulds contained in the actual sets.
With such a wide range to choose from, we left it up to 'aunty' to decide which set Santa would be delivering on Christmas Eve.
On the big day, my son ripped open the wrapping paper as only a 4 year old knows how and, as expected, was over the moon (excuse the pun!) to discover his own little Moon Sand Pet Shop.
On opening the circular plastic container, we discovered it neatly packed with:
2 x bags of coloured Moon Sand (one purple, one grey)
A cardboard base representing the tiled floor of the pet shop, with pictures of cats and dogs, pet toys and a grooming area.
1 x plastic stand-up model of the pet shop building
3 x plastic moulds comprising a little girl figure, a dog and a cat
1 x plastic spatula to aid in moulding the sand
So, what do you do with it?
Each Moon Sand mould consists of two mirror image panels designed to create a 3D figure. Both panels should be filled with Moon Sand and pressed together to seal them and form the chosen figure. Once the moulds are removed, your child can create their own little pet shop environment.
Quite simply, it all fell apart!!
When my son (with a little adult assistance from mummy and daddy) gently prized the moulds apart, the Moon Sand figure, which is supposed to be able to stand upright, slowly started to crumble and fall apart. According to the ads and the selling blurb on Moon Sand, the sand is apparently designed not to dry out, but in my opinion, it simply was not moist enough to hold a figure together.
I dare say that, if we had added a little water to the sand, then it may have done the job that it was designed to do, but my advice to anyone considering purchasing a Moon Sand set would be to consider buying something else instead,
I was left with a slightly disappointed son, who we are now in the process of training not to go up to 'aunty' and telling her that her present was rubbish!
Thanks for reading.

I bought this product as a christmas present for my son as I seen the adverts on t.v and it looked fantastic.
When I went to buy it I was innitially shocked at the price as it contained nothing more then two small pots of sand and a couple of moulds. I very nearly bought a sand pit and a huge bag of sand instead as it was cheaper. I went with this product in the end as it really did look great on the adverts.
According to the publicity moon sand is fully moulable and never dries out so can be used again and again so I thought it would be a good investment as it would last a long time and I could purchase further sets to add to the collection.
My son was delighted when he opened this on christmas day and later that night we got it out to have a play. There were two pots of brightly coloured moon sand and several animal shaped moulds so we set to building a pet shop.
I was very dissapointed to find that the moon sand is not as it says fully moulable. We tried several times to make a sand animal and the sand just crumbled apart every time, after adding a few drops of water to the sand I managed to make the mould hold for a few seconds then it just collapsed.
Not being able to make anything my son lost interest and I started to clear away, this is when I was most dissapointed. The sand sticks to everything, and I mean everything. I spent hours removing it from clothes, tables, floors, hair etc. By the time it was cleared up there was so little usable sand left that I just threw it all away.
I went back to the store and bought the sand pit and sand instead. My son played with this set for hours, adding water to mould shapes and letting it dry back out to sieve and pour.
The natural sand has lasted far longer then the moon sand did and provided much more entertainment for less then the price the moon sand cost.
If anyone else is taken in by the advert I would seriously suggest buying natural sand instead as it is a really dissapointing product and I just wish I had of gone with my original thoughts.
