I bought the Mosaic butterfly set for my 6 year old daughter''s Birthday as she loves to make and create things, and it doesn''t make a mess! It comes with different shape butterflies, all marked up, with a crib sheet that matches the numbers to the jewels. It is then basically like painting with numbers, except of course you''re putting jewels on in a specific pattern. From a parent''s point of view I think it is a worthwhile present, it takes some time to complete, but not too long that your child will get bored, and it is easy to see the progress your making, and inspires them to continue to finish. My daughter''s verdict is that she loves it; she has started one butterfly and at the moment keeps going back for more. She has already decided what the next one will be and loves sorting out the jewels and doing them in different orders. It''s a nice idea to include hanging stickers for each of the butterflies for when finished, so they can be wall hung quite easily. I think it''s great for the 5-7 year old age range, and helps them to develop their fine motor skills. I thought it was a little bit pricey for what it is (it is after all just card and plastic) but they are a good quality, the glue sticks well (none have come off yet) and so far it has provided lots of fun for my daughter, rainy days or not!
Sticky Mosaics Butterflies
My 5 year old daughter is very creative, she loves drawing and painting and anyone and everyone gets given her creations. For Christmas we had bought her a Crayola Mosaics set and I reviewed it on here where another member told me about the sticky mosaics collections.
Price and Availability
The only place I have actually found Sticky Mosaics on sale is on Amazon, there are a great number of different sets in the series and they do vary in price, you can buy sea life ones like dolphins, insects like ladybirds, pets like cats and dogs along with jewellery boxes, bracelets and hairbands to decorate and then there are First Mosaics for younger children. For the butterfly set I paid about £12 but I got free delivery so thought this was a pretty decent price.
When the box arrived I knew my daughter was going to want to play with the set as soon as she saw it. The box is bright pink in colour meaning it was always going to be a hit with my daughter as that is her favourite colour. There is a logo in the top corner showing that this toy is from the Orb Factory and there is a picture of one of the butterflies on the front of it. The box is really well presented in my opinion and it makes you want to know more about what's inside it. The box states that this set is suitable for ages 3 years and up over although my nearly 2 year old helps her sister with this although she gets the pieces off the backing rather than putting them on the pictures.
Inside the box you find a leaflet about other products in the range which I thought was great as my daughter was able to use this to point out which other sets she would like afterall Santa must keep eyes and ears wide open all year round! You get an instruction leaflet which is simply a small piece of brightly coloured paper which shows the four finished butterflies and has a little diagram showing how to remove the pieces from their backing and place onto the template. There are four butterfly templates each one is a different shape which I liked as I expected them to all be the same just with different decorations on them. You also get a template on the instructions which shows you which stickers go on which numbers and then you have all the sticky shapes which you need to make the pictures. Finally in the set you get 4 plastic hangers for your finished art work.
I think the sticky shapes are lovely and colourful and there are also little gems which just about any little girl is bound to love. There are 6 different colours of small foam squares which are glittery and holographic as well as a few plain ones. There are two different gem circle shapes, a gem heart shape, a gem near oval shape and then finally 3 different colours of gem flower shapes. All the sticky pieces are real girly colours, you get silver, gold, pinks, purple and then one shade of blue.
This is a very easy set to play with as I have said the instruction simply tell you to take a piece from the backing and place on the picture although what the instructions actually misses out is that there are numbers 1-13 on each template and you have to match the correct sticky shape with the correct number. As this is sticking by numbers it wouldn't really be any good to a child who doesn't recognise numbers up to 13, my daughter knew her numbers so she could play with the set easily although with the first butterfly she completed she struggled to keep track of which sticky shape matched up to each number but once she got onto the second butterfly she knew what she was doing.
My daughter has really loved playing with this set and she is completing her last butterfly as I type this review, I have ordered her another set for Christmas which is of 8 different birthday cards to make which I know she will love as she always makes everyone birthday cards.
The butterflies when completed can have one of the plastic hangers attached to them which is basically a rectangle of flexible plastic which is sticky on the bottom half to stick to the back of the butterfly and then there is a hole in the top half so you could hang it up on a nail. We haven't hung any of the butterflies up although there is one stood on my shelf and she has given her Grandma one and insisted she keeps it on display.
This set is fantastic, it is great value for money and every piece of it is brilliant quality. The butterfly templates are very strong and haven't got any damage to them at all, the numbers of the templates are very clear and written in bold black writing so they are easy to recognise. The sticky pieces are great and even though some of them have glitter on them there is no glitter transfer and we have found there are extra ones provided as she has some left of numbers she is finished with which is good as she has managed to loose a few pieces generally found stuck to my living room carpets.
Sophie has spent a along time making up the four butterflies and she is really proud of herself whenever she finishes one, this was a really great present and like I say I have bought her another one in the range as I really cannot fault this product at all.
