I bought these Shrinkles as stocking fillers for my older granddaughters' but forgot about them so only ended up giving them to the girls' last weekend when I uncovered them in the bottom of my wardrobe.
Shrinkles are basically pictures of princesses which you colour in, then cut out the figure and bake in the oven. The baking process will shrink the picture down to a much smaller size and you can then add an embellishment to turn it into a fridge magnet, badge, keyring or mobile phone charm. The embellishment is provided in the packet with the picture, but please be aware that you really do get pot luck when ordering online so if you have your heart set on a specific use for the picture then you'll need to go and have a look in a Hawkin's Bazaar shop and physically pick your own out.
I was lucky in that the two I ordered came with the embellishments I'd hoped for; a fridge magnet and keyring. The packaging is rather cheap looking but perfectly adequate for a stocking filler or little treat at the weekend, my granddaughters' certainly didn't give the packets a second glance when they saw what a lovely arty item this was.
The pictures are more appealing to younger children I think. My nine year old granddaughter loves the Disney Princesses so thought her picture of a Princess Mermaid was perfect, while her 12 year old sister didn't seem overly impressed with the overall design although still enjoyed colouring the picture. I noticed that the pictures coloured well, despite the paper having a strange texture none of the ink ran and it dried quickly with no smearing. The girls' used felt tipped pens and the colour was vibrant and rich, the pictures looked bright and cheerful by the time they'd finished and absolutely great when I snipped them into shape along the clearly marked lines.
Once baked the Shrinkle shrinks down very well, the picture is still in shape and the colours have set into a vibrant sheen. The finished article is like a stiff cardboard, I don't think it would stand much bashing around so perhaps a keyring is not the most sensible option.
The embellishment is very easy to fit to the picture, each one is specific to a certain picture so there are clear instructions on how to put them together. The keyring simply pushes through the top of the picture and the magnet attachment has self adhesive on the back so it's a simple case of removing the paper and sticking the magnet to the back of the picture. The magnet is the Princess Mermaid and she looks lovely on my fridge, all the more special because my granddaughter put time and effort into making it and it's a very personalised magnet. The keyring is beautiful too but I'm a little worried about using it as I'd hate it to get marked or bent in my bag, I have some hooks on my fridge door so will probably hang it up on here for an extra little decorative touch in my kitchen.
These Fairy Tale Shrinkles only cost 99p, for which you will get one picture and one embellishment. This I think is an excellent price for such a sweet little novelty, my granddaughters' enjoyed colouring the pictures and I certainly love the end result.
Colour in the detailed fairytale pictures, put the 'paper' in the oven and it shrinks to a neat little trinket with which to make a badge, a mobile phone charm, a fridge magnet or a key fob. Each kit contains accessories to make one item. Items may vary from those mentioned.
