Toys R Us Sit N Draw Creativity Desk
Advantages: sturdy, good price, fun
Just before Christmas I decided I wanted to buy my son a little desk. He has developed a love for drawing and 'writing' and I thought a desk would be more comfortable for him than sprawling on the floor. I looked in a few shops and online but the desks were either not suitable for toddlers (my son is just 2) or they were ridiculously expensive. Then I received a ToysRUs catalogue through the post. One of their pre-Christmas sale items was a plastic blue and red desk. Normally priced at £29.99 I was delighted to see it was reduced to £14.99.
I decided I wanted to buy it but then I worried that they would sell out quickly at that price, especially as it was approaching Christmas. So we went to ToysRUs the same day - posting the catalogue out really worked for them this time!
The desk comes in a big box and I could see from the shape of the box that it was unassembled so I was going to have to assemble it myself. I'm always a bit cautious with flat packed things after having a disaster with a wardrobe I tried to build many years ago. However this desk couldn't have been easier to make. There is an easy instructions sheet supplied and it was very simple to follow - although to be honest the desk was that easy to build I think I could have done it with no instructions! I simply had to slot the legs into the cutout sections of the base and seat. No screws, hammers, glue or anything else like that needed, you just push one bit of plastic into another bit of plastic. This doesn't make the desk less sturdy, it feels very safe and solid still as each piece of plastic is wide and supportive.
As I finished slotting the final piece in, my son was pushing me out of the way as he was so desperate to sit at his new desk. It is very easy for him to sit himself at and he doesn't need to be helped in at all so it allows him to be independent.
The table part of the desk is tilted slightly towards the child. This is useful as it provides a better angle for them to draw or read rather than having it totally flat. There is a slight lip at the bottom of the desk to prevent any books or paper from sliding off because of the tilt. At the top of the desk there are two holes that hold two yellow beakers. The beakers can be used to hold pens, paintbrushes or water for painting. Also along the top is a wide cut out section in which your child can keep their art supplies. The little storage areas are useful as it lets the child keep everything close so they don't need to keep going off to get different equipment.
The desk is surprisingly light and I can lift it with one hand. However when my son is sitting at it it never feels or looks like it is unsteady. All corners are rounded which is a very sensible idea as my son is frequently tripping over his own feet and banging into things. Thanks to the rounded edges he doesn't do himself any serious injuries.
The desk is suitable for ages 2+. It comes in red/blue or pink/purple. It is currently half price at ToysRus - £14.99 instead of £29.99. I think this price is a real bargain as it is the sort of item that gets daily use. I am very pleased with this desk and my son does use it every day. Not only does he draw and paint at it, he likes to read his books and sometimes eat his dinner there too.
Summary: Highly recommended
