“ Brand: Vivid Imaginations / Type: Drawing / Age: 4 Years+ „
When my daughter was nearly two a relative bought her an Original Magna Doodle for Christmas.
When I was a child I always wanted a Magna Doodle and never had one. I had an etch-a-sketch but could never get the daft thing to draw anything! Anyway, I think when my daughter received the Magna Doodle I was more excited than she was!
The board is quite big for a young child but it is very light and has a handle part at the top so it's very portable. There is a magnetic pen that is secured to the board by a short length of cord and four different shaped magnets. The magnets sit in shaped areas to one side of the drawing screen. The screen is grey and has small honeycomb shapes on it. I think the idea is that there are small pieces of metal or something behind the screen and when the magnetic pen is used these pieces are pulled up and adhere themselves to the back of the drawing screen making your picture. There is a handle at the bottom that slides across the width of the screen and this is used to clear the screen ready for your next picture. The manufacturers recommended age range is 4+ but I think that younger children can get a lot of enjoyment from this toy. The small shaped magnets may be a choking hazard but I keep mine out of reach and they only use them when I am there to supervise.
I have three children aged four, three and one and they all love this Magna Doodle. They use it all the time and my daughter often takes it to bed with her so she can do some drawings before she falls asleep. The board is very sturdy even though it's not very thick and my children have even stood on the drawing screen without causing damage. One thing that has caused damage to the screen is when my children have stabbed at the screen trying to draw rain or dots and dented the screen. Due to the damaged the dented areas cannot be cleared and so small spots are always visible. This has not affected the movement of the sliding eraser. The whole thing is very well made and has taken a lot of punishment in the last two years. We have not had any breakage's and the pen is still attached to the cord. In my opinion there is nothing that is breakable and the only hazard I can see is the shaped magnets.
I really like this magne doodle. The only problem I have with it is that the shaped magnets just sit on top of the board and so drop off if the board is tipped up. To improve the board a small compartment to hold the magnets inside would be very useful. I think I have seen this type of drawer on an Early Learning Centre own brand of magnetic writing board. The thing I really like about the Magna Doodle is that it means my children can do drawing anywhere they like. We have taken this Magna Doodle on car journeys and when we have been visiting relatives. They can draw as many things as they like without the need for reams of paper or pencils and crayons that are easily lost or broken.
I do not know how much my Sister-in-Law paid for the Magna Doodle that we have but they are available at Toys R Us for £14.67 (Dec 08). You can also get Colour ones and character ones like Peppa Pig that are a little more expensive.
I would recommend this Magna doodle to anyone with young children as they are very entertaining and can also be used as a teaching aid.
The world's favourite way to doodle - draws like magic, erases like magic. Magnetic stampers lock in place. Easy grip stylus and carry handle.
