Advantages: Ready made pool of customers. Most cons are obvious.

Disadvantages: Expensive & poor service & a few bad buyers.

I recently sold an item for £20 and paid just shy of 25% in various fees.
Ebay charges sellers excessive and opaque fees disguised by listing charges in tables which you have to actively look up before you know what you're actually spending. The figures are also massaged by splitting costs between the Ebay and Paypal brands. It seems ridiculous to me that antitrust means Microsoft can't offer decent inbuilt antivirus but Ebay can cut out Neteller.
There is very little protection for either buyers or sellers; customer support takes about a month to get back to you and they always find a reason to leave things as they are regardless of which side this favours.
The company advertises that buyers are insured when using Paypal and that sellers are partially protected against charge backs; neither is true.
Feedback is useless as sellers are only allowed to be positive and people routinely buy and sell though different accounts, sometimes to themselves just to boost ratings.
The site is quite easy to use but it's no Amazon and recently I haven't been able to upload photos (of course customer support doesn't answer emails).
Most buyers and sellers are honest, I haven't sent recorded in years but then I suspect they wouldn't cover me even if I did.
The only true advantage to Ebay is its brand; you won't reach as many potential buyers anywhere else so unfortunately you have to put up with them.

Summary: Ebay is over rated here because anyone who dosen't love them posts in the disillusioned thread.

i bought something ages ago and still nothing, ebay was useless helping me and the seller just chooses not to answer my e-mails, thankfully it was only £5!

Well, I suppose ebay is overrated because I have not heard of those problems before.
