Advantages: can find bargains
Disadvantages: they have terrible customer service
I used to be a big fan of ebay, selling loads of items on my partners account.
I then decided to open my own account and continue selling and buying. I sold a few things and bought a few things but eventually went back to using my partners account.
I then received an email to my personal account (which i used to set up my own ebay account) saying i had an unpaid reminder for a £1,000 diamond ring! I was in shock and tried logging into my account to sort this mess out. I had to go through the various stages to get into my account as my account had been hacked and my password had changed.
I then looked through my account and see that over £10,000 had been spent in my account in the past month. I was in utter shock and couldn't believe what had gone on.
I automatically phoned ebay customer support(i got the number from my partners account as he had been invited to use the number because he had over a certain amount of feedback, which i think is ridiculous)
I phoned ebay and explained what had happened to the woman who replied 'you dont have enough feedback to use this number' I was disgusted! I then explained again that my account was hacked and that the hacker had sent a number of emails asking for the goods to be shipped to Indonesia. I also use paypal quite alot so i am aware of the scams at where you get sent an email from 'paypal' claiming you have to send the goods, give them the tracking number and paypal then send you the money. Alot of people where falling for this and sending out their diamond rings etc. I would go to email them and tell them not too and it would say I was unable message anyone.
I couldn't believe I had explained all this and she still said there was nothing she could do over the phone because of my feedback.
I had to go trough live help which is a waste of time and never gets anything done! All this happened in May and im still in the process of getting it sorted.
My heart goes out to all the people who have lost £100's of pounds due to this scam which i told ebay about and they done nothing! I truly am sickened at how ebay handled this matter and I hope they have to pay every penny back!
Until all this happened I couldn't have rated ebay more. Unless your a powerseller you get nowhere... not even when you inform them of a £10,000 scam!
I would love for ebay to contact me to sort this out but i think ive got more chance of receiving a phone call from the queen!
Summary: i use to love ebay now i think they are as bad as the scammers!

- 16/06/09 I would recommend visiting your local Trading Standards as soon as possible and see what they can do. They will have no problems getting this sorted as they can close down eBay in a heart beat. Fair doo's they won't but they have the power to sort this out. |

- 15/06/09 I have'nt lost any money but its just annoying as i get 10-20 emails to my personal account regarding the unpaid items etc a day.
I know what you mean about the sellers falling for the scam emails but some people have to fall other wise they would't do it eh!
Ive tried several times to contact them via email, live help and sent messages to different departments but still no change.
I have tried contacting the sellers but i have had a limit placed on my account so i cant do anything- not even close the stupid thing!
I'm sure it will get sorted eventually, im just shocked at how they handled the situation. |

- 15/06/09 Hmmm...I used to be a Power Seller but that meant nothing really. Still a drop in the ocean to eBay unless you're a big company like HP / Argos / etc whom also sell their stuff on eBay.
Right, as for this problem, it sounds like someone's been shopping using your account but doesn't sound like you've lost any money. Have you changed your password? Are you able to message the sellers via the Email Seller link on each auction to explain? Have you reported this issue via their email system and using the relevant help section? They will normally stop your account and cancel all auctions involved so nullifying the transactions.
I would never have recommended phoning eBay using that number you got from your partner as you said already, it's meant for those with a certain number of feedback and eBay will stick to that.
As for the sellers, if they're falling for the trick, then they should know better. If they send items via Trackable means, then they should be protected but they shouldn't be sending such high value items to unconfirmed addresses in dodgy countries. |
