I have only recently used Ebay through work and have never really used it before. I work in the Sports Nutrition Industry as a distributor of sports supplements from the USA and Europe. Since the recession hit the UK, it has not really affected the industry as such however had got rid of many of the smaller companies that operate on small margins and ruin the industry for the major players.

With this happening this has left a gap in the marketplace and one that I was not prepared to miss out on and jumped at the chance to obtain our cut of the Ebay.

Ebay in many ways is an excellent way to make money, however as a business and opening a shop on ebay is really easy to be and you don't have to be a registered business. The cost to open a shop is just £14.99 for the basic package which really is ample for any business and provide you with the appropriate sales tools to utilise on your business.

The shop is really easy to populate, however is time consuming and with it being a business it is better to have your shop populated with buy it now prices, which is an instant transaction, and people more often than not make a payment into your paypal account straight away, just like a website sale.

Once you have been on the site for 3 months and you are selling as much as ebay requires you too thats when you can qualify for powerseller status which gives you additional benefits, bigger discounts therefore more margin on your products.

The only problem that I see is the fees that you have to pay are quite extortionate. As ebay akes around 10% initially and then 6.6% when you are a silver power seller, paypal then takes a certain percentage of the amount that hits your account which then includes postage and packaging fees which really you don't want them being eaten away, this makes you realise how smaller companies that rely on there business from ebay start to make a loss as you normally find that they don't hold the stock and order it in to fulfil.

Since being on ebay we have been very successful and have got to be inthe top 5 within the industry which isn't bad at all, however 5th to be isn't acceptable and I won't stop under my company becomes the dominant player!
