Advantages: Great Bargains
Disadvantages: Most payments via paypal only, some sellers are quite unprofessional
Based on my previous reviews, you may note that I just love shopping and online shopping gave me an excuse to indulge even when I am not able to leave the house. Amazon UK remains my favorite shopping site but its rival site, Ebay.Uk has been gaining popularity throughout the years. I was however, not at all impressed with either the service or the quality of items which I have ordered off Ebay. Recently, I also purchased an item which arrived nearly three weeks late.
The layout of the page is quite catchy and attractive, I must admit. As soon as you log on the home page, bold yellow, white, blue and green colors just bounce off your screen, with the unmistakable Ebay.Co.Uk logo at the top corner. Similar to Amazon, the items are classified into tabs: The home page presents the buyer with Categories, Shops, Ebay Motors or Daily Deals. However, in comparison to Amazon, when you click on Categories, it does not immediately display the various categories of goods. Instead, you are taken to another page where all the items are displayed under specific headings. I personally did not like that at all! I would have much preferred it if, like Amazon, we could get a list of all the specific categories on the home page itself- without having to venture into the site itself.
Price-wise, I would also have to admit that many of the prices are extremely competitive to Amazon. I was looking for a locket the other day and I was amazed by the price difference between Amazon and EBay lockets, as well as the prices between other items. It, however, did lead me to doubt the quality of these items, especially when I saw someone selling a locket at £1.25; it was claimed to be a genuine antique piece and the seller placed a note of warning saying that the locket could bear a lot of wear-and-tear marks because it was been around for one hundred years. Someone, I had some doubts about whether such an antique locket could be at £1.25 only! (It was ready to buy). I was also not at all impressed by the lack of professionalism of many sellers. The messages which they post are literally in informal form, and some of them even use sms abbreviations which are practically impossible to understand.
I did get a few nice articles off EBay over the years but lately I've seen a decline in the site and I sure hope that it does not last. I am also weary of the fact that most sellers want payment through Paypal only, meaning that people who do not have a Paypal account will not be able to purchase their items.
Overall, I would say that it is worth taking a look at the site- the bargains and prices are incredible. But it is also a site where I would advice someone to shop with caution, especially due to the large number of credit card frauds which have occurred on EBay throughout the years!
Thanks for reading!
Summary: I was only impressed by the bargains

- 15/08/09 Far too expensive to sell on ebay now, esp as paypal take their cut again.
I moved to ebid.net as seller and buyer and haven't looked back |

- 28/07/09 Paypal is the reason I don't use Ebay anymore. If they opened up more options of payment (like they used to have) then I'd go back to using it. |
