Advantages: You can sell your items to anywhere in the world if you wish
Disadvantages: Your items may not sell, you still have to pay seller fees
My first transaction with ebay was when I bought my second car. My first car, bought at auction, was an old banger, it just lasted six months. My brother had an account with ebay and helped me find my next car.
My brother purchased the car for me on his ebay account. We picked up the car together, paid the money in cash to the seller in person. The transaction went well and we stayed in the car for about an hour as I phoned insurance then I drove the car away.
Some time thereafter, I became an ebayer. Not sure which came first, me buying or selling from ebay. I started selling as I wanted to sell my children's outgrown clothes, DVD's, toys and other items I wanted to sell. What didn't sell at ebay eventually got into the give to Charity pile.
The results were quite good. I sold some items. Some things didn't sell, even after relisting them a few times. When things did not sell, that is a disappointment as you pay a fee for the listing. There are various fees to be paid as a seller. The listing fee, a portion of the final purchase price, fees for uploading photos.
I also bought some items from ebay, i.e. clothes for kids and me, more DVDs, etc.
Some things I have ordered did not arrive, this happens more often when the item I purchased is located overseas. Pursuing the orders or refunds is much easier using Paypal dispute resolution, although I have had refunds by cheques which I have had to organise myself with the seller.
Summary: Good for selling items you no longer want, need. Your items may not sell but have to pay fees
