Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: -
I know that eBay has been around for a little while now, but it was only 5 or 4 years ago when I finally decided to sign up!
Guess what-I love it!
I found it so easy to use and it is a quick and easy way to sell your items without having to get up at 5 in the morning! (car boot)
I think that anyone who hasn't given it a go yet as it is amazing what people sell-almost anything!
What it ebay?
Ebay is an online market site, also known as an online action. What this means is that you can bid and buy from the comfort of your own home. You can also buy from all over the world as long as the seller agrees to send it to you (sometimes it'll state where they send it to in the listing!) On eBay the main payment method is through PAYPAL, although some sellers do not accept this as they take a cut of the final price and they would much rather a CHEQUE or a POSTAL ORDER.
The Basics:
Here are some of the basic things/rules on eBay:
Starting bid:
This is the price of which the product starts at. This can range from just 1p to the price at which they want. The starting price normally varies because of the original cost of the product, quality, condition and the quantity.
Bidding:
This where you bid on the item. When you bid on any item on eBay you are entering a legal and binding contract.
Also just because you have bid on an item doesn't mean you'll necessarily win it, in the same instance in an auction house just because you have placed a bid doesn't mean that you'll actually win it.
You can put in your highes bid though whih is normally the absoloute most you are winning to pay, when you put in this people can bid you up to try and exceed your bid in order to win the item.
Buy it Now:
This is an option which isnt on every listing, only the ones where the seller has selected they 'Buy It Now' option.
This gives you the chance to avoid having to bid by purchasing the product there and then, buy simply selecting 'Buy It Now', which is then followed by 'Commit to Buy'.
Some products have bidding and a Buy it Now option, this basically means that you have a choice and normally the bid option is at a lower price than the BIN (BUY IT NOW) option as the expect people to bid it up.
For expample the starting bid might be £4.99, yet the BIN might be £19.99.
If someone commits to BIN then the product will end immediatley, unless there is more that one of this item which is when the ones left will stay. However if someone places a bid on the item that has BIN price, then the BIN offer will disappear and will just be an online auction.
Sellers:
Sellers are the people that, well, sell the item! These are the ones that decide on the starting price, the postage cost and how long the listing is. Most of them will let you know when your item has been dispatched, but not all of them do-which can be a bit annoying, especially if it's for a gift and you need to know when it's going to arrive.
Buyers:
Buyers are the people that buy the product. The buyers have to buy the product for the price that they won the item at, so if you put in £10, yet you won the item for just £6.89, then you'll pay £6.89 and not £10.
You also have to pay the postage rate, so always check before you buy an item ad this is some peoples way of making money. You cannot change the postage right or try to 'haggle' with the seller, however if you buy more than one item you are sometimes offered combined postage.
Combined postage:
The is where you buy more than one item from the same seller. Not all sellers offer this, but some do and it is basically a decrease in the postage price. So you may have bought 3 items from the same seller each of the items have a postage price of £1.50, so this would normally cost you £4.50, but this may change to £3.50. So if you are considering buying more than one item off of the same seller, always ask before hand whether they offer combined postage discount.
Selling items that don't excist:
You can be removed from ebay for selling items that aren't really there, for instanceif you are pretending to be selling a 'ghost' then ebay feels that this is unacceptable and will either remove the listing or remover you from ebay.
Or if you try to sell a 'positive feedback' then this is under eBays feedback manipulation policy and will either again remove the listing or remover you from ebay.
Is eBay easy to use?
I think that eBay is very easy to use, as first I had my doubts about it and wasn't really sure if it was 'safe', but I find it fine.
It is very easy to navigate through as well with easy click options along the top including: Buy, Sell, My eBay, Community and others.
It is all very clear on how to get to anywhere you want to and when buying eBay normally talks you through what you have to do.
Does it take long to set up?
I really didn't find it that long to set up at all and was well worth it!
I think it took me around 20/25 minutes to set up and that was including paypal as well!
My view:
I absoloutley love this website and will be doing plenty of my christmas shopping on here, it is so quick, easy - and comfortable!
I love the fact that they have made it so easy to use and navigate through.
If like my you like your lies in but want to have a big clearout then this is really the place to go! You can sell all sorts on there, some peopleI have seen selling toe nails and their hair from once they have had it cut, which I persnally would NEVER do, but each to their own!
I would reccomend this to anyone as can not really find any bad points about it!
Overall I'd sign up fot it today!
Summary: Comfortable way of making money!

- 10/10/09 Nice review.
I no longer buy and sell on ebay. I do all my buying on ebid.net now and use Google Checkout to pay.
Sadly ebay is a total rip-off for sellers and has been getting progressively worse. The result of ebay's ever changing policies regarding sellers is ultimately passed onto the buyer - i.e. what you pay
Don't be fooled by the 'free P&P' ebay now enforce on sellers.
Selle rs can no longer charge P&P on certain items - ebay market this as 'Free P&P' - there is no such a thing.
The net result of this is even more ebay and paypal fees for the seller, meaning the seller has to add recoup these fees to via the item price.
Free P&P doesn't exist - someone has to pay and ultimately it is the buyer.
At least on ebid.net you can see what you are actually being charged for P&P |

- 22/09/09 Well researched and reviewed. I have bought a few original water colour paintings on ebay at incredibly low prices. Infact the postage cost more than the paintings. I advise you check out the buyer's and seller's feedbacks, and not buy from or sell to ones with low ratings. |
