Because Ebay Said So!

Advantages: Great savings. Convenient. Secure.
Disadvantages: Can become addictive. Selling Fee's can quickly add up.
My wife and I have been using ebay solidly for the past few years and I have to say it's been a real saving tool and money earner for us. If you are patient enough to keep searching and wait it out, there are some great bargains to be had and on the selling side it offers you the perfect portal to get rid of "clutter" and make a few quid at the same time.
It's become a first port of call for us whenever buying a new item for the house, garden or even clothes. Even if you can't find the exact item you are looking for it's ideal to give you a rough idea of cost. It's perfect for those little things you aren't sure which shops would sell (I recently bought an ultrasonic spider deterrent as I didn't know where my local spider deterrent shop was!)
On the selling side we tend to wait for the free listing weekends. If you are selling off some unwanted items which can go for 99p, it makes sense to do them on the free weekends rather than pay maybe 30p in fees to advertise them. We also like to keep the listings simple as adding "Buy it Now" or "Reserve" options can quickly ramp up the fees. Add good pictures of items and include on your advert that more pictures can be emailed rather than pay to include more on the advert.
The ebay app is also very handy for bidding/selling on the move. Highly recommended!
Summary: Would highly recommend due to the huge variety of items that can be found at bargain prices.
