Advantages: Excellent Search Facility, Free Registration, Bidder/Seller History
Disadvantages: Selling process takes a while to negotiate
Auctions? Load of old tat at inflated prices and dodgy blokes with bundles of used £20 notes. Pick your nose or scratch your ear at the wrong moment and you've just bid £5000 for Elton John's pressed flower collection. You've obviously never come across eBay.co.uk, probably the UK's busiest auction site and one where you can pick up anything from a car to a dinky toy. Or even peruse the wierd, wonderful and obscure things that people actually buy - used ticket stub from an old Spurs game anyone? Whatvever your fancy, there is likely to be someone on eBay who has what you're looking for. Alternatively, rummage through those cupboards and find that old Neil Sadaka LP you never took out of the wrapping - it could be worth a small fortune (to Neil Sadaka, any way). Once you've negotiated the simple registration process, bidding is made simple by establishing the maximum price you want to pay. You get notified of your bid and told if you've been outbid. If successful, the seller contacts you and (assuming our friends at Royal Mail aren't on strike because they're demanding an extra cube of sugar in their tea) you should have your goods soon after. Selling is also fun, but the process can take a little while to negotiate. Pick a realistic starting price (with the option of a reserve price) and choose the length of the auction. You'll soon become hooked on regularly checking its progress - evening if it's only a couple of pounds! Bidders and sellers provide feedback once a transaction is complete so everyone on eBay has a 'history' you can access. Dodgy dealers soon get found out. Overall, eBay will appeal to thousands, if not millions, of people who wouldn't even have broken wind in the direction of an auction house, never mind visited one. If I were an auctioneer, I'd be very afraid.

- 17/06/01 fantastic op! I'm an e-bay addict too and have managed to increase my collection of Beatrix Potter memorobilia very nicely through it. May even try selling soon. I have been caught out occasionally by the odd dishonest seller but that's the way of the world - it happens on the high street too! |

- 17/06/01 I've just recently found ebay!!! My bidding finger has been rather busy! It's a really good site and I'm even contemplating clearing out my old rubbish ( oops objects of worth??) and trying out the selling aspect of it too. |
