Advantages: great fun to search, excellent for collectors, some good bargains
Disadvantages: some pathetic items up for auctioning
Ebay is the biggest auction site on the web. I first visited the website about two years ago, it just really didn't appeal to me though. I revisited this website several months later after reading a dooyoo opinion and realised that you didn't have to give credit card details when signing up, this being the reason I hadn't signed up earlier. As soon as I clicked on to www.ebay.co.uk I was greeted with the bright homepage with it's great choice of primary colours to greet people. If you do not know what to bid for use the search and I am sure you will find something, thousands of items are sold on this website, probably even millions. A few great categories you can bid on items in are Antiques & Art, Dolls, Doll Houses, Film & Television, many more also in the list. A category I think is good on the website is coins because if you are a collector some are only bidding at about 50p, but some are ridiculous with thestarting price of the bids, I remember a used cd was £12.99 and I just thought why bid for that which is probably not in good condition when I could go to a shop and buy it brand new. This is dfinitely a great website for collector's although I would not be able to trust a person with just a descripition of an item I only bid on items with photos. Some things are very cheap, I look at some of the clothes which are very nice and some good names there too. I would keep away from the clothes sometimes though because they are not always what they say and some people are bad sales persons. When you have signed up and you want to big you click on the item and see the methods of payment the user wants you to pay in if you are bidding. In a box at the bottom it has a price 20p more than the price from the last bidder so you can beat them, but some don't get seriously bidding until a minute before the closing time of the bid. To pay someone you usually send a cheque or you can do it by credit card
or paypal. If you have bid on something and then someone has bid higher you will be sent an e-mail and you will be told. So if you accidentally press to bid don't worry someone will probably bid for it which means if they do it higher you will not pay and the winner will. If you fancy making yourself some cash, then you can also do this on ebay. You type what it is and give a descripition you will then also choose what categories of search it will be in, but remember if you choose a main search category you will be paying more, but if you choose General it is only 30p. Once the search part is over you will then either take a picture or move on, if you are taking a picture you take it from the file and for one picture it is free but for any more you will have to pay. Once all of this is done you can preview it before it goes up for auction. Also you choose how many days you want the auction to last. When someone asks a question about your item it will be e-mailed, also when the auction closes you will be given the e-mail of the highest bidder to discuss sending the item. It is good on ebay because you can click on who is the highest bidder and see history of them, comments people have left on them like they pay quickly. You are sent a link as soon as the item goes up for auction so that you can check it and see how it is going. I have only sold one item so far which I have made £8.50 from. Some items sold are ridiculous and I think they should keep their items for themselves because noone will bid. Overall I think this is a brilliant website for collecting and getting things and making yourself some cash.

- 26/03/02 I am another ebay addict. I recently sold a ww1 ashtray which I expected to get £20 tops - in the end it went for £200 because the auction was seen by so many collectors who really wanted it. That's what I love about ebay - you reach so many collectors that you wouldn't even at a well attended local auction house. |
