Advantages: cheap items, easy to purchase, lots of help if needed
Disadvantages: bad if not on the internet, some items you can not win due to it being an auction site
I have used e-bay now for around 2 years. I got the idea to search there from a friend of mine. At first I was a bit rusty and didn't really know what to do but you soon get the hang of it.
My biggest surprise was the number of items for sale. If you want anything and I literally mean anything it is usually for sale. This was demonstrated several weeks ago when I needed new contact lense solution. For a joke I put contact lense solutions into the search area and to my delight I found 2 pages listed. So you can literally get anything there from cars to DVDs, phones to a new house.
The site is very easy to use. You go to the website and get to the main page. Here you put anything you wish to look for in the top left hand corner where it says search. You then click ok and pages come up for you to look through.
If you wish to bid on anything you need to first get a user name and fill in your details but this is easy to follow and takes only a few minutes. You are then free to bid on any item you wish to try and buy. After you have clicked you will get a message saying if you need to bid higher e.g 'You have been outbid.' If you still want to bid for the item you need to put in another offer. This is good because you can put in the highest price you wish to pay for that item and if this price has not been bid yet you are in with a chance of getting that item e.g if the bid is at £1.25 and you highest bid is £3.00 if nobody else bids you will still get the item for £1.25.
The only downside to this is that if you work or are going out when the auction is due to end you can end up loosing the item you are bidding for. Even if you are at home you can still just miss the item because someone will bid 2 seconds before the end of auction. This is very annoying and you then have to start all over again trying to find the item again. The best bit is that there are usually quite a few of each item for sale so your chances of finding another one to bid on is very high.
There are several options to pay. The safest way is via paypal which comes straight off your credit or debit card. However, some people don't like using this way because paypal charge a percentage for using this service. Other payment options are cheque, postal order, bankers draft or cash. I wouldn't suggest paying by cash unless you use delivery which is guaranteed via the post office and covers for the amount your sending. I have sent cash before for over £150 but made sure the letter was covered for this amount.
As well as buying on ebay you can also sell your unwanted items too. I have sold many items that have been stashed away in the loft. People like these items like they do at a car boot sale. Things such as curtains, clothing, toys and videos are a few items I have sold. If you put a few items on its amazing how the cash builds up.
Whether buying or selling you have a lot of help with any problems you may encounter whilst on the site. Ebay is a large corporation now and there are many ways you can get help. There is a help button to click on on the tool bar. This leads you to a part of the site that deals with your problem. If you put in your question you usually get your answer of what to do. If you still can't get help then the customer services is open a few hours daily.
With each item you either buy or sell you have to give the buyer or seller feedback. This helps other people to know what that person is like at selling or buying. Things like if they pay well, if the item was as described, if the item arrived etc. Ebay are there to help if you ever have a problem with an item. There are toolbars all through the site and again you click on the one you need. With each positive feedback you get that number near a star which appears next to your ebay user name. This star changes the more feedbacks you get. You start off at yellow and work your way through several colours. I have over 500 now so the star is purple.
I would really highly recommend ebay because with the help and support you get you can't really go wrong. The site is huge and you can almost certainly get the item you want. If you know the exact name of the item this makes it easier too. e.g If you wanted a Little Tikes car set. You would put this into the search bar and it would bring up the exact item you are looking for. I would rate ebay 10/10 because they are helpful and the site is fantastic. Well worth the look if you haven't sought it out yet.
Summary: Well recommended site, you can buy anything here, you can sell your unused goods, help is there

chrisandmark - 04/07/05 We've sold cars, a fruit machine, iPods and all sorts on Ebay recently - don't think it'll ever be one of my fave sites though. |
