Advantages: great idea, its free
Disadvantages: not as good as it could be
For anyone still mourning the loss of Noel Edmonds’ MultiColoured Swap Shop, there is salvation out there. Webswappers.com is a website which allows you to swap all your old unwanted cast-offs for something shiny and new...as long as you can find some mug out there to swap with you. So now you can dig out that Des O’Connor CD that you inherited from auntie Doris, and that hideous jumper that Granny knitted for Christmas because you can bet there’s some poor sap out there who wants to swap it for their own selection of hideous monstrosities. To be fair, there are some good things here to be swapped as well as some really laughable offers, but whether that person wants what you have to offer is another matter. Setting up a swap is easy. Firstly you register with the site which is the usual form filling affair, and then you are ready to list your items to be swapped. This again is very easy, you enter the name of your item, a brief description, the approximate value in (pounds) and can upload a photograph if you have one on your hardrive although this is not necessary. You are then ready to enter the item you want for your unwanted item, again entering a title and category before clicking on ‘Save’ which adds your swap details to the database. After this its simply a case of waiting for someone to come along and want to swap your old tat for their old tat....great! However, if this doesn’t float your boat then you can also have a look through the existing database of available swaps to see if there’s something there which might interest you. This is easily acheived as all items are stored in a relevant category, which are plentiful enough to narrow down your search quite well. This isn’t the fastest web site in the world but its not too slow either so searching is not a chore as is the case with some others. If there is nothing there to tickle your fancy then you can set up an alert which sends you an em
ail containing all the recent additions to a category each week and therefore means that you do not have to keep visiting the site and searching through it which is very helpful - although it also means more junk mail in your mailbox. Overall, this is not a bad idea although I have used it a couple of times and never actually found anything of any use to me personally. Thats just me however, whilst you, on the other hand, may find this a perfect way to offload some of your old junk for someone else’s more interesting junk. If so, then its a great idea and its always worth a look anyway because you have nothing to lose.
