Advantages: great quality sound

Disadvantages: rubbish remote, minor niggles

When it came to buying an iPod dock for my daughter for her bedroom I was not looking for anything too fancy. All it needed was the ability to charge the Ipod and play music, anything else was a bonus. When searching I fell in love with the iGhost, a fun and funky little speaker dock which is available in black and white and bought it for around £40.

Things did not go well, the first ghost came home and worked for less than a day before dying. I was not happy and really wondered whether I wanted a replacement or not but the second ghost has been going strong for over a year now.

The iGhost is a compact unit, small enough to sit on a bedside table and yet it delivers an amazing sound experience. It takes several different types of iPods as the dock has the different sized adaptors, my daughter has both an iPod classic and iPod touch and they both work perfectly with this unit. The MP3 player sits in the top of the ghost, my daughter says she wishes that there was more support for the back of the iPod touch as the surround is only around 1cm high but the iPod has never fallen over. The buttons on the iPod are accessible whilst the iPod is docked which is important if you want to change playlists or access any other menu buttons.

There are a couple of minor niggles when using the iGhost. The first is the pathetic and tiny remote control which soon got lost. The second is the fact that the buttons on the machine are level with the body of the ghost and the markings soon rubbed off and needed to be redone with nail varnish so we could see them. The buttons do work well and the machine is simplicity itself to operate since it has only play, fast forward and rewind, pause, stop and volume controls. There is a blue light which shines from the bottom of the iGhost when it is in use. This could prove to be a distraction to those using it in a darkened room when they are trying to sleep or alternatively could provide a gentle glow for mood lighting or a night light.

The iGhost allows for 360 degree sound around the machine due to the positioning of the speakers. I am very impressed by the quality of the sound produced by such a small machine. The techies out there will be interested to know that the speakers produce 3W of sound and the subwoofer 9W of power. I don't have a clue what any of that means but the quality is brilliant. My daughter has an eclectic taste in music which ranges from naff pop like Busted, classical, rock and also has numerous audio book she likes to listen to as she falls asleep and comedy shows. They have all been played back in really good detail with the sounds being crisp at all frequencies and a well defined bass. There is absolutely no distortion of sound at all and none of the tinniness that often comes with lower quality speakers. The iGhost is also capable of producing an ear splitting volume which my daughter loves but I am not so keen on when the sound comes blasting from her bedroom to assault my ears!

The iGhost is a great wee docking station, charger and music player. At £40 it is a really good buy for a bedroom speaker which produces a great quality sound.

Summary: a good quality iPod docking station and music player
