When we had our old computer, we were absolutely lost when the speaker packed up after about a year, they really are a vital part of the PC setup and you don't realise how much you use them until they are gone. Luckily, a chap who worked with my husband gave him these speakers, which he was getting rid of.
I had never heard of the brand harman/kardon before we had these speakers, but apparently the are a really high quality brand who make top of the range products, the industry standard. This is certainly reflective of these speakers, which are very robust and solid and look very well made. The official colour is grey, but they have discoloured a little over the years and are starting to go a bit yellowish.
What surprised me about these speakers is that they have their own independent power source and have to be plugged into the mains, rather than just feeding off the computer power. The speakers can be used with PC's, Macs, DVD players and MP3 Players, as long as they have a 3.5mm stereo output jack.
It is very simple to attach the speakers to the PC. The lead goes into the back of the PC and the plug goes straight into the mains power socket. This can cause practical problems as you need power for your computer, printer, speakers and monitor, which needs a lot of sockets!
The speakers are simple in design. The right speaker has no buttons on it at all, and the left speaker has two knobs that twist to control volume and tone. They also have a headphone jack. You can tell the speakers are working, because each one has a green LED light that lights up when the power is on.
The design of the speakers as shown above in the picture ensures optimal sound. The walls of the speakers are non parallel, which apparently creates a more natural sound as they reduce "standing waves".
The power of the speakers is 12 Watt, and they produce a high quality stereo sound. I get no crackling or distortion with these speakers, and they are definitely superior to my previous speakers. Although they are quite big, they sit quite neatly and unobtrusively on the shelf in my computer cabinet. They are 7 inches high and 4.5 inches across at the widest point.
When we had our new computer a few weeks ago, I wasn't sure what to do with these speakers, as the new compter had its own internal speakers. In the end I decided to stick with the harman speakers, as I really feel that I get a better result from them than I would using the internal speakers, and I hadn't the heart to get rid of them as they have been consistently reliable over the five years that I have been using them.
Would I use this brand in future? Certainly. This product is well made and looks nice, although a little "retro". It is unusual these days for electronic products to be built to last, and I know a good quality product when I see one.
I would like to write about something that means rather a lot to me. I was silly enough to buy speakers that were fashionable, and recently noticed the quality of sound was lacking, and the only good thing about the speakers was their looks. This came about because I have moved and in my new house, I have more space, and therefore can up the volume without the sound drowning me out of the room.
I love music. It is very important to me, and listening to it is part of my relaxation. Therefore, to me sound is important. I also like gaming and the sounds on the computer are also important for this to be a pleasurable experience.
Somehow the new fangled speakers let me down, and I went to where I store all of my old accessories, and picked out the Harmon Kardon speakers that came with my computer from Dell, plugged them in and rebooted my computer.
These are not fancy looking although they are a similar grey to my other computer components and whilst they don't have a booster box or anything particularly fancy, what they do have, and I am amazed at this after so long not using them, is sound quality.
The speakers are simple to install, and their function is pretty basic, but what they offer you is a tone button so that you can set your preference with added or diminished base, a volume button, and a headset jack point which is very handy because it means that when I am listening at night, I do not disturb anyone.
The speakers are reasonably discreet and do not take up a lot of room on the desk. They have a light which is illuminated when they are switched on.
Very basic but sufficient for my needs, making installation easy.
Never needed it. They are superb speakers.
Here the speakers are a little old fashioned looking but I decided that sound was more important to me than looks.
But how do they compare with other speakers ? Having tried other speakers, and having used various computers with other makes, I think these are probably the best I have ever heard. They certainly do not distort at volume and the quality of sound is really every bit as good as my hifi speakers and I have to admit I use them more than the hi fi these days simply because they are there next to me.
System Type PC
Max Frequency Response 20 kHz
Min Frequency Response 80 Hz
If you are looking for good quality speakers and like music, then I would suggest that at £11.99, these are a serious contender to the market, and Dell obviously think so too, as they are provided as standard with their Dimension computers.
These are super and I thoroughly recommend them for sound quality and durability.
