Advantages: Compact, nice sound , easy to set up
Disadvantages: slightly under powered, longer cables needed
I have been running these Labtec speakers for a few years now and have been very satisfied with their performance. I purchased them as an upgrade for my computer and if my memory serves me correctly, they were approximately £50 extra. For your 50 notes you get a sleek, compact and nice looking set of 4 speakers (2 front, 2 rear) with a tidy and simple but effective sub woofer (non directional ?speaker? that handles the bass frequencies). There are 2 dials on the right front speaker that enable you to adjust the volume of the front and rear speakers separately. This is very handy for balancing the sound if the front speakers are closer to your listening position than the rears (or visa-versa). All these four satellite speakers are identical (apart from the dials already mentioned) and will fit in the palm of your hand. The sub is nice and compact compared to subs made by rival companies (Creative Labs for example) and it had a simple on/off switch situated on the top. There are no bass and treble controls on the sub, which is a bit annoying, as any adjustments have to be made using the windows software. Another down point is that the cables could be longer. Speakers such as these never come with adequate cable length and it is obviously much easier to coil up excess cable than to lengthen one that is too short. The rear speakers are attached to 7 feet of cable. There are also loads of cables to compete with when trying to tidy up your workspace but all the plugs are colour coded so setting up is very easy (I did it without using the instructions). As for the sound quality, for £50 you aren?t going to get amazing sound reproduction but these speakers have good punch for their size and provide an excellent multimedia sound experience. Especially when playing games with a Creative SoundBlaster sound card and EAX (Environmental Audio Experience) turned on. The sub is only rated at 15W, which means it does struggle a little on reall
y bassy tunes if you have the volume cranked up. But considering it is only 15W, it copes very well and makes things in the room vibrate when you play Chemical Brother?s Under the Influence (a great tune to test subs with). All in all, a great computer speaker system.
