Advantages: Good looking, great performance, price

Disadvantages: No remote control

Buying a new TV can be an expensive business these days. First there's the TV, the HDMI cables and finally the stand but even a top end 40" Sony Bravia (see my other review) only has 10w per channel audio output, hence the need for more power. To be honest, the TV is fine for watching soaps etc but just lacking in high-end volume and bass. As I have all my music on my PS3 now and the hi-fi has been retired, it was clear the TV alone wouldn't be enough, hence need for extra output.

No doubt like many people I did not want a 5.1 system as I do not want wires and speakers everywhere. I did not want a home cinema package as I already have the PS3 for playing DVDs and Blurays. I will admit I was a bit skeptical when a friend recommended these but thought I had nothing to lose - they were only £30 and if they didn't cut it, I could use them on my PC.

Well, sorry PC, they're connected to my TV and that's were they are staying ! The output is very very good, up to a max of 32w (total), more than enough for my living room which is about 16 feet long. It is very clear and warm and with more bass than you will ever need without being over the top. Music booms and movies come alive but the dialogue is nice and crisp; games really rock. I love my wildlife programmes, with these on you hear every detail you feel like you are there right next to that snow leopard. They fit nicely on the lower shelf of my Centurion Stand (see other review) and look the part next to my PS3 and other black AV kit.

In the box is the chunky sub, the two good looking speakers, the connecting cables and a 3.5mm/phono adaptor. To connect to a PC/laptop, just use the green 3.5mm jack. You can connect it to a TV via the headphone socket this way too but this doesn't give great results. I bought a red and white phono to phono cable (B&Q £4.48) and connected this to the adaptor cable supplied and then into the "audio out" socket of my TV. This gives the best output and of course you can control the volume from your TV remote.

I am really pleased with the results and my new AV set-up is now complete as follows :

Sony Bravia KDL40W5500U
Sony PS3
Humax PVR9300t
Logitech X-230 Multimedia Speaker System

I paid £29.99 from amazon for these but they are also £29.99 delivered from the Dell website with 5% Quidco, a saving of £1.50.

This is definitely one of the best £30 I have ever spent.

I have seen these before, and wondered about it. This review has convinced me of their worth.
