I looked everywhere for some new speakers. The problem with buying new speakers is you can rarely try them out (unless bought in a specialist shop). These I was fortuanate with. They have crisp 5.1 sound quality which puts my old speakers to shame. I must admit that I was apprehensive about philips, because generally I go for logitech speakers which are always a certain success, however these have a fantastic price for what you get. The clever volume control piece is fantastic, and prevents you having to fiddle around on itunes or on the computer volume control. The sleek design also helps you covertly put them into any room, and despite the fact that the wires are a little bit long, the speakers can fit far enough away from your computer to create a good surround sound, although I found I had to wrap the wire together behind each speaker due to the wire being too long.
I purchased these speakers probably just over a year ago for around £45. I had wanted some surround sound speakers to connect to my PC for ages, mainly so I could enjoy the benefits of surround sound when playing games (especially the scary ones), but also for watching DVDs and listening to music.
I didn't want to spend a great deal on them as, being a student, I wasn't too well off; so I decided to look for some well-priced 5.1 surround sound speakers. I spent quite a great deal of time researching various products and reading reviews; eventually I decided I wanted to buy these ones.
They soon arrived in the post, and I eagerly ripped open the box. The first thing I noticed was that all the speakers were a little smaller than expected. I thought that maybe they wouldn't be very capable of punching out much of a sound, however once they were set up and ready to go, I was proven wrong.
They were very simple and easy to set up. The box included an instruction manual, making it extremely easy to understand. It also includes diagrams indicating where each cable should be plugged in to. Each cable is also labelled with letters (such as FR for Front-right speaker etc) making it as quick and simple as possible for you to get things started.
The first issue I had was the shortness of the cables connected to the speakers. The description explained the length of the cables (and I measured them out before buying) but they were still shorter than I had expected. This made it difficult for me to place my speakers around the room, and since my room is fairly big; the rear speaker cables weren't quite long enough, and therefore I had to sit them on the floor.
Although the cables were fairly short, I eventually placed them somewhere and turned on my computer, then turned on my music. I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of sound and how loud the system goes. It was a huge improvement on my previous set of 2 speakers.
One feature which I love is the little Volume Control. It makes adjusting the volume of your PC extremely quick and simple! You simply turn the wheel clockwise to increase the volume, and anti-clockwise to lower it. The Control sits nicely on my desk, right next to my keyboard, making it easily accessible.
These speakers really shine when playing games. It's great when a character approaches you from behind and you can hear their footsteps, voice, or whatever sounding out from behind you. I love it when my friends would jump when they thought someone was behind them!
One minor issue I do have is, when listening to music, the front 3 speakers really drown out the rear ones. I adjusted the settings so that the rear speakers would be on their loudest, but still they are quite faint. Therefore, I don't really get that feel of music blasting at me from all angles too much.
Lastly, the accessibility of the subwoofer isn't great. Of course, you have the sub woofer facing outwards, but the On/Off switch and Bass adjustment dial are at the back, meaning I have to kneel under my desk and reach around the back of it to use it.
Over all, these are great speakers. I'm extremely impressed with them, and the minor imperfections fail to phase me as they do work excellently for such a small price. They are probably best suited for smaller rooms, rather than larger ones.
I give these Philips 5.1 surround sound speakers a 7/10
I was looking for a surround sound system for my home computer, and I didn't have much in the way of money to spend on one. So after searching for a long time comparing products, I managed to narrow my options down to this one, and a more expensive Logitech system that cost just over fifty pounds. I decided to go for this cheaper Philips system simply because I didn't like the speakers of the Logitech. To be honest I wasn't really expecting much from this surround sound system, after all how good can it be when it costs less than forty pounds and some setups I looked up went into the region of hundreds of pounds (and in a few cases thousands!)
Thankfully however, I am very pleased with the results I get from this Philips system, far better than I expected especially considering the low price. Whether I'm watching movies, playing games or listening to music, the sound quality really is excellent (granted there is some slight static near the highest volume.) The speakers are small and neat (though it would have been good if they were wall mountable.) The intrusions are very detailed and easy to follow making setting up the system a breeze. My only real complaint is that there is no headphone jack, but I suppose it's not a great loss.
But overall this really is a very good value system that performances excellently. A few minor omissions that I've mentioned above, means I can't award the product five stars, but if you're like me - on a tight budget, and looking for excellent sound for your computer, then look no further, as this Philips system is actually pretty damn good.
