If there's one word that could describe me, it's clumsy. Things break when I'm around. I don't even know how, I guess I must be heavy handed or just unlucky. A couple of years ago I broke the speakers on my desk top computer. I didn't bother to replace them because the computer is purely for playing the Sims 2 and I don't need music for that. However, when I broke the laptop that I was using at the time I had to start doing everything on my desktop. I tend to follow television shows on the computer rather than on television and I like to listen to music on youtube while I work so I really needed new speakers. To be completely honest my main criteria was that they were cheap. I was only planning on using them while I found a suitable replacement laptop so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on them. I bought the Sweex Black and Silver USB Speakers from WHSmith for £5.49. They were on sale and their full price is £9.99 but having just checked the WHSmith website they're still on sale for the same price. I bought my speakers over a year ago now and they appear to have been permanently on sale!
The first thing I noticed about these speakers was that they're really easy to use. You just plug them into a USB slot and they work immediately. You don't have to use a disk or anything. When I bought my new laptop I decided to go for a mini-laptop and the sound wasn't great on it so I kept using these speakers. The mini-laptop doesn't have any disc drive so it was great that I didn't have to use a disc to get these to work. One thing that I do find is that if I plug them in when I'm already listening to something on the computer I have to refresh the page for these speakers to work.
These speakers are described as stylish. I personally don't find them particularly attractive. They serve their purpose but they're certainly not something that I would want to keep out on my desk all of the time. I find them to be a little bit on the bulky side. They're not huge by any stretch of the imagination but they could be smaller and more compact. This makes them slightly less convenient. It would be nice if I could take the speakers with me when I go away but they're just too big for that. It also means they take up more space than I would like in storage.
I guess the main thing is the quality of sound coming from the speaker. The quality is ok but it's not great. The good thing is that the volume can go up reasonably high. I don't ever have reason to be playing really loud music but if I'm home alone I like it to be quite loud and I find that with these speakers the volume can go high enough to satisfy me. I do find, rather annoyingly, that there often tends to be a buzzing sound that goes with my music. The buzzing sound is at it's worst between songs. I find this really irritating. It's one of those things that you get used to but when I first start listening to music it annoys me.
These aren't wonderful speakers. They're cheap, they're easy to use and the quality of sound is reasonable but they're a bit on the bulky side and the buzzing is incredibly irritating. These were pretty perfect for my original purpose but as I now have a need for them on a more permanent basis I find that I could do with better speakers.
