I've been using these Typhoon speakers now for a while, I purchased them in Aldi for £19.99 which is about what they are currently available for. At the time of purchase they were a great bargain and they still represent good value for money if purchased today. They are described as active wired speakers and come as a four piece set.
The two main pieces are two smallish speakers which stand about 5 inches high and form a backwards arc, they are silver grey in colour and I think would go well with most décor. The sound from the two main speakers is excellent and you can hear very specific detail when listening to you music through them. I am currently using mine connected to my PC but they are suitable for using with a decent Hi Fi system and still achieving excellent sound quality.
The second part of the kit is a sub woofer, which is quite large, being about 9 inches tall and 7 or 8 inches wide. For some reason the cloth covering on this part of the set is black and not silver as the two main speakers are. Since this unit is supposed to be places central of the two main speakers it may not be quite as suitable as the other speakers in some décor. It produces a deep bass sound and added sound effects from PC games and perhaps movie soundtracks. It makes one hell of a difference to the actual overall sound, making it more vibrant and giving a 3D effect in some games whereby the sound feels like it is flying over your head................a really superb effect and sound which greatly enhances any game play and indeed any atmospheric music.
The final part of the set in the control box which in an attraction silver colour with four buttons.............well three buttons and a large volume control and two smaller knobs. The top two buttons are to vary the bass and treble to suit the users requirements. When I say bass I am meaning the sub woofer, its effects can be increased and reduced from one of the small knobs. The last button is at the bottom of the unit and is simply the power button. A nice feature of the control box is that the main volume control knob, which is perhaps 1 and a quarter inches in diameter, is surround by a nice blue light, which looks particularly nice when the lighting is lowered.
The speakers are wired to the main control box by hard wire supplied, there is no connector just a simple clip mechanism which when depressed provides a hole for the wire to be placed in. Once all the wires are connected and the unit is powered up the sound produced is just superb. There are three traditional additional ports Red, Yellow, White to facilitate the addition of an external source ie a DVD recorder or TV in fact I used as a home cinema system for a while with excellent results, similar to those experienced with some of the PC games.
I am well pleased with the sounds produced by these speakers especially when they only cost £20, I think I got another really good bargain at Aldi, which is now becoming one of my favourite stores.
