Advantages: can stop and start when you like, unlike Radio 4
Disadvantages: expensive if you only listen once
I get bored easily, but I get travel sick too. Audio books are ideal for me, either broadcast to all the passengers in the car or for my personal enjoyment only. I have also found that best-sellers often come out on audiobook at the same time as they are published in hardback and the audiobook is often several pounds cheaper. Audiobooks are often abridged, however if you cannot wait to get your hands on the bestseller, this is a way to save money. Another bonus of the audiobook is the wide range of voices chosen to read them. Sometimes it is the author, which adds a new dimension to the story. My favourite is Rebecca read by Mel Gibson, I have listened to that many times. Childrens books and nursery rhymes are available on tape and CD. Although this cannot be a substitute for a bed time story, a familiar tale can be a calming end to the day for a sleepy child. I have listened to audio books on the beach, and while decorating too. The only problem is getting my hands clean enough to change the tape!

jillmurphy - 28/07/00 I listen to audio books all the time, and I love listening to well-known actors reading them, it reminds me of Jackanory! My favourites are Tim Piggot Smith reading Bernard Cornwells Arthur trilogy and Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter. |
