I travel back and fore from Scotland to Wales which is a long haul but a really good way to pass the time is to listen to a talking book.
Even if you are driving, you can still concentrate on the road and get into the story you are hearing.
I find that many of the service stations have bargain buckets in their shops. Take a look in them and you may well find some interesting talking books.
I think they are a brilliant idea because they open up a new world to people who may be unable, for some reason or another, be able to read and know the joys of 'the novel'.
I used to have Macbeth on tape, it wore out in time. I would play it in the mornings when I drove my children nine miles to school. At five years of age my daughter knew the story of Macbeth and could quote several lines when asked.
My nan went blind in her old age. She used to love reading and missed it a lot until we discovered the talking books. She had a cheap little cassette player by the side of her and thoroughly enjoyed listening to stories by Dickens, Trollope and Hardy, read by a familiar voice.
If you are an insomniac but can't manage to focus late at night to read, pop in some ear phones and switch on your talking tape..almost guaranteed to get you to sleep.
Dyslexic? Have learning disabilities? Never mind, you can still become very familiar with the classics and Shakespeare, poetry too.
At reasonable prices the talking books are wonderful gifts to give to the young, the elderly, the traveller...anyone. Have I given you an idea for Christmas?
