ABOUT THE BOOK:
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is the best selling fictional book of all time, with an estimated 150 million people having read the author's work. It is an epic 1200 page story that has fascinated readers worldwide since its publication in 1954.
When I first discovered this book, I was 19, and working in an office. I had never been into fantasy, but picked this up out of respect for what I'd heard about it. Over the next month, I lived and breathed The Lord of the Rings, reading it when I got up, in my lunch break, and every evening.
There are dozens of reviews on this title already, so I'll make mine specific, and tailor it to those who aren't fans of the fantasy genre.
What Tolkien has managed so convincingly to do, is to create a believable world. The history and depth of his creation makes it seem real, and THAT is what makes this book so alluring (to me anyway). Because Tolkien has taken such time and effort to create his world, it does not feel like you are reading about something made up.
Some of us, who love reading, want a book we can sink into, and believe: this is it. No matter how quickly you read, this will take you a long time finish, and you'll never question the characters, races or settings. Tolkien took 10 years to write it, and spent a lifetime developing the mythology of Middle Earth, and you can see the love and passion he has put into it. The story itself is one of romance, friendship, adventure, fantasy, and a sprinkling of comedy; it cannot be explained in a few lines.
If you're not into fantasy, I encourage you to try this book. It will offer you a detail and depth unparalleled by many of today's shorter titles. It is a book you can believe in, and that is what makes it so brilliant.
