THE STORY:
Austen's novel can be categorised in many ways: a family saga, a romance, a satirical effort and a social comedy. The beauty of the text is that it means different things to different readers.
Having taught this text to my A Level English class, I personally revel in the social comedy - particularly the portrayal of Mr Collins, whereas many of the girls in the class adore the romance between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth, and some of the more immature delight in Lydia's playfulness.

THE CD: Released in 2005, this is an undabridged edition of the novel. With something so well written as this, it's not worth going for an abridged version, as they are missing out key parts, so this is the one to go for. Emilia Fox does a good job of bringing the story to life, and you get the impression she is basing her reading style on the BBC TV performance that did so well. Although it's £27 on amazon, there are other sellers on there selling it brand new for £6, so don't miss that!
