One of our favourite books in our house is The Gruffalo. But, there's no such thing as a Gruffalo you say, but wait yes there is, he's a terrible creature with terrible teeth and terrible toes and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose, his eyes are orange, his tongue is black, he has purple prickles all over his back!!
The Gruffalo is a beautiful children's book written by Julia Donaldson and follows the adventures of a little mouse who walks through the forest encountering foes along the way and explaining to them exactly what or who is a Gruffalo. The foes he happens upon are a fox, owl and a snake. Each of these animals wants to eat the mouse but he tells them he is off to eat with the Gruffalo. He portrays the Gruffalo as a scary character, each time getting more descriptive.
We enjoy reading this in our house and pretty much know the story off by heart so when I saw the CD version of the book on sale in The Early Learning Centre for just £2.99 I knew I had to get it. I think the reason why it was so cheap is because this is just the story being read, there are other CD's you can buy with songs and other stories on but this like I've said is just the story.
The story is narrated by Imelda Staunton, the famous English actress. According to an article I read, she was born on the 9th of January 1956 and is an OBE. She has starred in the Harry Potter films as Professor Dolores Jane Umbridge. What I really like about her voice is that its very classical English and in my opinion the perfect voice to read a story like this. Her words are clear and pronounced well and she brings so much life to this wonderful story. Unlike the DVD of The Gruffalo there is only one voice on this CD, on the DVD there are various people who voice the different characters but here the story is just being read by Imelda. There are nice touches to the story though such as background noises such as leaves crunching as the mouse goes through the wood, the rumbling of the little mouse's tummy and the snake hissing on the path ahead etc to really bring the characters to life.
We like to listen to this story and read the book at the same time so the words are brought to life and we also put it in the CD player in the car if we are going on a bit of a journey.
A great story read perfectly to help entertain your little ones.
The Gruffalo audio cd is in a word fab!! My daughter loves the gruffalo story and I have read it so much that I now know it off by heart!! I brought the story cd to put on for her during those times that I am just too busy on the telephone or washing up to be able to read to her again.
My daughter is only two but this cd keeps her attention just as much as if I was reading the book to her myself. Plus another bonus is that the narrator reads the story exactly as I do. In addition you have some sound effects such as feet crunching through the wood, the rumbling of the mouses tummy and the snake hissing on the path ahead.
If your child enjoys the gruffalo then this book will definately not dissappoint them. I would definately recommend you buying it for them.
This is one of Julia Donaldson's most popular creations, loved by children young and old. A mouse wanders alone in the deep dark wood, and along the way meets different creatures who tell tales of this fearsome creature the Gruffalo.
Light up the children's imaginations with this wonderful story, and listen together as the mouse goes on his brave walk through the wood. The repetitive phrases allow children to join in easily with the story. The sound effects add to the magical element of the story, setting the scene and atmosphere for the children to imagine being that little mouse, about to come face to face with this BIG, SCARY, Gruffalo !!!
This is a must buy for children who love the book. I use it in my classroom, in the listening corner where children can independently listen to this well loved story while, following the pages of the book. Extend the children's learning by using the CD to incorporate role play of the story, with props. It's a story that is so easy to listen to, and one of those that your children will never grow tired of.
This CD uses rhyming text to tell toddlers about a mouse who took a stroll in the deep, dark wood. To scare off his enemies, the mouse invents tales of a fantastical creature called the Gruffalo. So imagine his surprise when he meets the REAL Grufallo.
