      A good Christmas stocking filler

      The Spy Who Came For Christmas by David Morrell

      == Plot ==
      This particular novel is based around Christmas Eve in Santa Fe. A wounded man clutching a baby in his arms runs through the snow covered streets, trying to avoid the killers on his tail.

      We find out he is Agent Paul Kagan and that he is on the run from his former colleagues in the Russian Mafia. The back-story is revealed as the novel progresses as to how the main character ended up in his current predicament and who the baby is.
      Anyway, along the way he takes shelter in the home of a mother and her young son who have experienced some domestic violence.

      Agent Kagan will have to use all his lethal skills and the help of his new friends to get him through the next few hours . . .

      == My thoughts ==
      The author, David Morrell is most well-known for the novel he wrote, Rambo. I think he is overrated as an author. Though, this particular novel would make a good Christmas stocking filler. It has the Christmas spirit thing going on with people helping each other out.

      I listened to this while it was snowing, so I ended up enjoying it more. I don't think I would have liked it if I had read it during summer.
      The setting is described well enough and it is not too long. The story takes place over about 5 or so hours. The chase is the main focus of the story. Intermingled with the present and the chase, are flashbacks as to how Agent Kagan ended up with the baby and on the run.

      I liked the main character who is a true professional. Some of the twists are predictable though especially when it comes to the mother and her young son. The use of a baby in the story and its importance was too obviously trying to link him to baby Jesus. I'm not too sure what word I should use to describe these twists, but they felt a bit soppy to me, but as it's a Christmas novel I didn't mind.

      I thought what little action there was, was well done. I particularly, liked the way Kagan improvised and managed to use household appliances as weapons.
      The twist at the end is not something I would expect to happen in true life. I wouldn't have thought he would have been able to get away so easily. Though, I expect this kind of soppy stuff to be in a Christmas novel.

      At the end of the novel, there is an afterward section, in which I believe the author himself reads out the last section of the book. This is a short story about 10 minutes in length and the author explains to us how he came to write this novel.
      He doesn't have a good technique of reading but I always like to find out how authors got their inspiration / ideas about a book.

      == Audio narration and availability ==
      It is available on Amazon. This is unabridged and is 5 hours and 50 mins in length. It was read by David Colacci. This audio book was published in 2008.

      == Summary and recommendation ==
      If you like spy / suspense stories and you are thinking about what to read over Christmas, then I can recommend this. It won't take too long to listen to. It also has the Christmas spirit thing going on. It will most likely leave you with a happy fuzzy feeling after you've read it.
      Overall, the story itself is average but it has the Christmas spirit thing going on which I liked. I wouldn't have liked it as much had it not been set during Christmas. I would have to give it 3 stars.
