Advantages: smells gorgeous, repels moisture, tames frizz and adds shine
Disadvantages: none that I could see, apart from the initial outlay seeming expensive
Things that are very bad for your hair include blowdrying, using straightening irons, highlights and swimming in chlorinated water. So, naturally, I do all of these. Add the fact that I was born with uncontrollable, flyaway hair that frizzes at the drop of a hat and the result is a bad hair day everyday...for life. Well, that's what I thought until I tried Aveda's Purefume Brilliant Anti-humectant Pomade, which claims to "give your hair a polished look...repels moisture for a satin finish". Hey, wait a moment...doesn't a pomade make your hair sticky, 1950s Brylcreme style? Not this one. You only need a tiny amount, which you rub gently in the palm of your hand until it melts. Next dab a little on your fingers and skim the top of your hair with the lightest touch to flatten the flyaway bits. You can then smooth the ends (which are usually the worst affected by damage and frizziness). The blurb on the back states that you can use it before or after styling, although I've only ever used it after styling. The first thing you'll notice when you open the very attractive blue glass container is the incredible scent. Amongst its ingredients, the Pomade includes coconut oil, palm oil, geranium oil and Aveda's special perfume consisting of various plant oils. Sounds like a lot of oil, doesn't it? Sounds as if you'll look as though you've washed your hair with the contents of a deep fat fryer. Happily, this is not the case. The Pomade melts so easily that, provided you use the recommended tiny amount, your hair is left feeling smooth but not at all greasy. Neither do you end up with stiff, unnatural-looking hair, as the product is so light. What you do end up with is a sleeker look, with those irritating frizzy bits tamed down so that you no longer have the appearance of someone who has stuck their fingers in a plug socket. I haven
39;t yet had the chance to fully test the Pomade's supposed anti-humectant properties, but I spent a few minutes in a relatively steam-filled bathroom and my hair escaped unscathed and looking none the worse - still smooth and shiny. Don't be put off by the price - the fact that you need to use so little of it in order to achieve the desired effect means it will last for an incredibly long time. And, heck, even if it didn't work as well as it does, your hair smells so darn good that you'd feel wonderful using it anyway. NB I understand that Aveda products can be a little difficult to obtain. Mine were bought from House of Fraser in Nottingham, so other department stores in this chain may also stock this brand. ********************** UPDATE ------ Finally completed my anti-humectant test. You'll be pleased to know that the Brilliant Pomade kept my hair smooth and most definitely non-frizzy during a drizzly weekend away in London. I love this stuff!!!!
