Advantages: Read on, you'll see!
Disadvantages: Might not be very easy to find in the UK =(
It's not often where you buy something for your hair, and continue to use it 10 yrs later. (Although, my grandmother still uses Head and Shoulders....which she started using in the 70's =) There are a lot of factors in continued hair product use.
1.) You REALLY really really like the product. More along the lines of LOVE the product.
2.) They still make it, and don't appear to be going out of business anytime soon or about to replace it with something else.
3.) The price stays the same or is affordable enough to purchase when you might need to go on a budget.
4.) That it can adapt to your hair changes as you age.
5.) That you don't find a new product you end up loving more.
So far, none of those factors have come into play for me with Aveda's Brilliant Pomade.
*****1999 - My first run in with Aveda's Brillant Pomade*****
Wow, does 1999 seem far away or what? I can't believe it's been 10 yrs ago, but , there it is. 1999 wasn't extremely memorable for me. I was 20 yrs old, lived in the same apartment for the last 3 yrs ( I moved out at 17.....I know, really stupid....I was overly independant), and had quit College to work full time. Again REALLY stupid.....any of you under 21 thinking about quitting University or not going? DON'T! I ended up going back to University at 25, but it was so much harder then. I also broke up with my fiance and had my family move 4 hrs away. Yikes, the way I'm making it sound, it was really a crap year!
I guess one of the few bright spots of that year though, was.....a hair product? HA! Sounds ridiculous, but it's almost true. I had gone through one of my stupid dye happy phases where I went from really dark to really light and back again. My hair was soooo dry and damaged. Everytime I wanted to blow dry it, it frizzed out and looked like it had a million split ends.
Bring on the Pomade!
When a beauticianist I finally was able to trust introduced me to Aveda products I was skeptical at first. How good could they be? I bet they're just overpriced items that happen to smell good right? Yet, my stylist told me to trust her, and I did. To this day I really do owe her to how great my hair is today.
When she first used this pomade on me after blow drying my hair I was taken aback by how great it smelled. I mean this smelled like expensive, but subtle perfume. Plus it lingered every so slightly so that whenever you moved your head, the scent was still there, hovering. I guess if it was a fragrence you only like " so-so" , you wouldn't like it to linger , but this one is the type of scent that I know the vast majority of people love.
***** What "IS" a Pomade?*****
In so many words....i'm not sure. Well, at least, i'm not sure what the EXACT definition is. I do know that it works as a sort of "hair smoother/soother".
It works the best when used after blowdrying when your hair is the frizziest or the driest. My hair is naturally wavy though, and I even use this after it just dries naturally. The main purpose is to not only calm down any flyaways or smooth the hair, it's to also....
* Helps condition it
* Protect it from the elements
* Makes it Shiny
* Gives your hair a "just been to the salon" smell
* Lasts all day
* Only needs a small amount to be used in order to work it's best
******What is that FANTASTIC Smell!??*****
For some insane reason I have an extremely picky sense of smell. To some people that might seem to be a boon. In my mind though, it's annoying as he**. It also makes picking out perfumes and toiletries extremely difficult, since I rarely find scents I like. You know what it's like though when you get a whiff of something that turns your head and makes you say out loud " Wow, something smells great"? Well, this stuff had that effect on me.
So, not only does it smell divine, but it works wonders where you thought wonders weren't possible on a bad hair day.....
*****How it Works*****
You know that day where your running late for work and you blowdry your hair as quick as possible? It ends up crazy dry and feels like a broom right? Well Aveda Brilliant Pomade will come to the rescue. You take just a very small amount (about the size of a pea for long hair, and half that for shorter), then you quickly rub it between your hands and run it through your hair paying close attention to your ends. You'll look on in wonder as your hair transforms into a sleek, shiney, and soft form all around.
It has a vasaline type consistancy and the jar will last you about a year or a little longer depending on how often you use it. It doesn't make your hair greasy,sticky,or oily either, which a lot of these type of "pomades" usually do.
I think this will cost you about 15.00 pounds at several various hairstylists that offer it, but you might be better off trying to find it online somewhere. Aveda's products are all natural and not tested on animals. All of their products also have a particularly pleasant and singular type of scent to them. Usually it ranges from extremely fresh and clean, to earthy and herbal.
You'll get your money's worth out of this stuff!
Summary: A hair smoothing gizmo that lasts all day, doesn't make your hair greasy and conditions it too!
