Advantages: good for the body and the earth

Disadvantages: quite expensive

If you don’t already know about Aveda’s concept in beauty care, then briefly speaking, it’s a company that strives on using ‘green’ materials such as herbs and essential oils and minimal amount of preservatives. According to founder Horst Rechelbacher, “Aveda strives to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world.”

Therefore, this body cleanser, meant for invigorating and uplifting the senses, is made up of loads of herbal goodies such as aloe vera, witch hazel, peppermint and spearmint essences and avocado oil just to name a few. One thing I found quite amazing is that the first ingredient listed (ie. highest amount in the product) is aqueous extracts of aloe vera and witch hazel. Normal cleansers would usually start with aqua or water. This shows that Aveda meant what they preach. This cleanser is meant to be used like a shower gel. The added bonus is that it can also be used as a shampoo. Great for travelling!

It feels really silky on the skin and it smells really refreshing because of the peppermint. Once, I was having the flu and I couldn’t smell or taste anything. After showering with this product, I felt my nose clearing up. At first, I didn’t realise it was the cleanser because I couldn’t smell anything – I thought it was the decongestant pills I had been taking. After awhile, I knew it was the product because every time after I showered, I felt really refreshed and less sickly. My skin felt really smooth and moisturised as well.

The down-side is that the smell doesn’t stay on my body, so the sensory effect doesn’t last after I leave the bathroom. I’ve recently tried Original Mint Source shower gel and I could immediately smell the mint and it really cleared up my nose pronto! In terms of long-term sensory effectiveness and cost, I wouldn’t recommend Aveda energising b
ody cleanser but it is something that I would buy as a treat and if you believe in ‘greener environment’ and not costs, then go ahead. It will definitely look cool on your bathroom shelf! Everyone who uses your bathroom will think you have environmental principles and you aren’t a cheap-skate!
