Advantages: Weightless, hair is full of body & shine, not tested on animals

Disadvantages: Contains a paraben

For years I'd been looking for shampoo to solve my problem: static, fly away hair. Up until I was 21 I had shoulder length hair with a few layers - nothing particularly stylish, and a hair style that I've since learnt did not suit my hair type. It was constantly battling with lank hair that I had to wash every day and I was totally addicted to straightening irons. I flitted between shampoos that were on special offer in Boots, always opting for the ones that claimed to repair and nourish the hair. However all this changed when I visited a new hairdresser 4 years ago. She said that my hair was thick in that I had a lot of hair but each hair shaft was quite fine and can't take heavy products. She advised me to use hair products specifically for fine hair and I have used Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo ever since and never looked back! She cut my hair into a bob which I find so easy to maintain as it just falls into place. I will never go back to having long hair!

Using the product

I always make sure my hair is thoroughly rinsed before I apply the shampoo, as I find it lathers up better on very wet hair. Usually one wash is enough, but if for some reason my hair feels dirtier than usual I might do a second shampoo. The product has a very invigorating, fresh minty smell that is a great wake up first thing in the morning. I can also detect a slight herbal scent which must be the rosemary. The consistency is clear and quite runny. I actually find it washes out of my hair better than other shampoos I have used in the past. When combing out my hair (after using the Rosemary Mint Conditioner) I find that my hair fees very clean and smooth - almost squeaky clean! After I blow dry my hair, it has a soft shine and feels clean and bouncy. That is what I like most about the Rosemary Mint Aveda products: they don't weigh the hair down, and I can easily create volume when blow drying my hair. I don't have any static when using this shampoo and no lank or limp areas. I choose to wash my hair every day so I can blow dry my hair into a style but it certainly doesn't feel greasy in the morning. After drying my hair there isn't a noticeable scent - I just have clean and manageable hair!

Suitability

The bottle states: "weightless cleansing leaves fine to normal hair healthy and full of body". I find this to be 100% accurate as I do have fine hair. However, my husband who has thicker hair than me doesn't find this shampoo suits his hair as well as I do, and uses a MOP shampoo instead. I'd say that if you have thick, coarse or dry hair then you need something more nourishing. But if you have fine, greasy or limp hair then you'll probably love this. I found my hair was static with other shampoos and I think this was a combination of using products that were too heavy for my hair, and also using cheaper shampoos that are laden with chemicals that build up on the hair. I often hear experts say that it's important to use a different shampoo from time to time to remove the build up of product, but I honestly don't have this problem with this shampoo. I use it all the time and my hair always feels nice!

The ingredients

There are quite a lot of ingredients on the bottle but one that is not there is sodium lauryl sulphate which is a chemical found in many products that is known to be harsh on the skin and potentially dangerous to our health. However I am slightly disappointed to see that there is a paraben in there (methylparaben), which I am quite surprised about as Aveda portray themselves as selling natural products. I learn on their website* that they are phasing parabens out of their products and developing new formulas without parabens. Aveda don't test on animals, which is what initially attracted me to their brand, and claims to actively support the development of alternative methods to animal testing.

Value

I buy my Rosemary Mint Aveda shampoo from House of Fraser for about £9.50 and I find that a 250 ml bottle lasts me 4 months. I believe that it also comes in a 1litre size for about £30 which works out as better value if you use the product regularly. I feel the shampoo is good value for money as it does what it claims to do and it has really made me feel better about myself as I'm not continually fussing about my hair being static and limp.

Overall rating

This shampoo is fantastic and does everything that I want it to do, but I am slightly disappointed that it contains a paraben which I try to avoid so I give it 4 stars.

How curious, I've been told the same thing- that I have fine hair but lots of it.
