Galt Baby Nest
by womble1985 I was given this with my first child - just the ring part, not the overhead gym bit. It is a large inflatable rubber ring much like you would use in the pool/sea and a large fabric cover with a fabric base in the middle of the ring creating nest. It looks great, it is fun and very brightly coloured with lots going ... on with a farm based theme. It has textures and sounds for your baby too. There is a ducks beak that squeaks when squeezed, a white furry sheep, a noisy crinkly flap with a snail on it, a shiny bucket and another crinkly wing. The inside of the nest is yellow with red flowers. To put it together you inflate the ring every so slightly (I did this by mouth as we don't have a pump), then unzip the side of the fabric ring and pop it inside, you can then continue to blow it up. Once inflated zip the side back up and its done! Well I put this up before my son was born as it says suitable from birth and I wanted it all ready in his nursery. Now I am not sure how this is suitable from birth as there is no position I could put him in that was comfortable. Granted he was a long baby but even so he was no-one near going to fit in the actual nest bit. I tried again a couple of months later when I could sit him in it a bit more and propped up with cushions, yet he still fell either to the sides or forward. Again I tried when he was just about able to sit himself but he still fell to the side or kicked his legs so he slipped forward in to an uncomfortable position and got annoyed. By the time he could sit unaided he was far more mobile. If I put him in it within a few minutes he was hanging over the sides and falling out, or he would push back with his legs and back flip out of it. I put it away in the loft. This week I got it out again for our 16 week old daughter. She did the same; I propped her up and she just kicked so she slipped down in to a slumped position. I think she might sit in it better in a couple of months when she is learning to sit unaided as my son couldn't ever sit still so fell, but our daughter seems more calm and not as wriggly. So I will leave it blown up for a few more months before giving up on it completely. It just doesn't work for us. It either needs to be smaller inside so it is more snug and supports the baby better, or bigger so a baby can lie in the middle so it can be used from birth. It is made from good quality material, it is thick and hard wearing and seems very durable. It looks fun and although it is big it is flat and light so if you want to keep it inflated but out of the way it is easily propped up somewhere. The rubber ring is quite thick too and having had my now 2 year old jump on it repeatedly it appears to be hard to pop! I think the nest alone without the gym retail for around £20-£25 which is an awful lot for a rubber ring. I am glad I never bought it myself. They don't really have a long life span so I would imagine any second hand would be in very good condition. My 2 year old now finds it great fun to jump in and out of, to sit in and put his toys in, so at least it is getting plenty of use now even if it is not intended for children his age. Galt Playnest
by NUDUL When I fell pregnant I knew that our son's first Christmas wasn't going to be easy to shop for - I was due at the start of November and was expecting to have an eight week old at most if I was early. It turned out that I was 4 weeks early and our little one will be ten weeks old, so same question. What do you buy a ten week old for ... Christmas? As yet he isn't holding his head up long enough to be in a chair sat up, he can reach toys and likes to bat them but doesn't really grasp any thing but fingers, he likes lights but not loud music. So when you look at toys you can buy from birth there isn't that much. His stocking is full of teething links and toys, and we managed to find a V-Tech teddy that was from three months. I couldn't believe my luck when I found this Galt Play Nest for £18 in the sale in Tesco's. We bought it straight away and wrapped it for Christmas after making sure everything was as it is supposed to be. The nest is blown up and nicely padded for baby to sit inside and as it is circular there is nowhere that they can fall to, they are completely supported. Because of the way it is built you can pop toys inside the seat part as well, it keeps them off the floor and within baby's reach. A great toy for young babies to give them a little independence whilst giving them a lot of support. Read the complete review |

Galt Playnest
by CrazyEgg Our neighbour popped round with this just after Christmas when Baby CrazyEgg was seven months (four months corrected). He has three children and all of them enjoyed the nest. They were having a clear out and wondered if it would now be of use to us. At the time I had no idea what it was so I said "Um...". Then, not wanting ... to pass up a potentially great opportunity I said, "Yes, I am sure it would be useful. Thank you very much." Before I knew it our neighbour was in our lounge Huffing and Puffing and Blowing up a very large inflatable ring. He stopped when it was just about half inflated- caught his breath and issued a top tip: It is at this point that you put it inside the fabric cover. Like so. [Shove, shove, shove.] If you fully inflate it, you can't get it in." "Ah." I replied, before settling back with my cup of tea and packet of chocolate digestives to observe the next proceedings. As it happens, there was not that much more to see as the setting up of the nest and play gym is very easy. After a bit more huffing and puffing the ring was fully inflated, encased within a brightly covered fabric cover that featured various farmyard scenes: a sheep with a furry body... (Do you mean woolly, CrazyEgg? Would that it were, Reader, would that it were! No, I am afraid I mean furry. No elasticity, no clustering, no folds or ridges: it is not wool.) ...A duck that squeaks... (Do you mean 'Quacks', CrazyEgg? If only! No, I'm afraid it most definitely is a squeak.) ...A horse hidden behind a fabric gate that goes "Kerrrrunch!"; a scarecrow with a silky, rattley tie; a tractor on a bumpy rubbery road; a bee with shiny wings; a cow chewing hay and a pig looking pleased with himself. Once the nest was inflated, our neighbour took eight plastic rods from his bag, slotted pairs of them together via one-way plastic connectors so that there were four rods, slid them into tubular fabric covers, designed as rainbows, and then fitted the four top ends into a four way connector. The other ends of the rods slotted into elastic holders positioned around the nest. Finally onto these rainbows he hung an assortment of jangly soft toys: sun, moon mirror, ladybird and chime bird. Then he presented me with an instruction booklet. And then he went home. And here we are eight months later, and although the gym has now been detached, the nest is still in daily use. In fact as I type, Baby CrazyEgg is asleep in it, propped up with a cushion, head and feet supported on opposite sides of the nest. Elmo is doing likewise. What is its function? As with all good baby toys, the nest adapts to the changing needs and demands of your Baby. Galt have really thought this one through and the instruction booklet makes this very clear. As well as assembly instructions and safety information they have included a 'Play Development Guide' that takes you through how the nest can be used: Phase One is Birth to three months; Phase Two is Four to Eight months and Phase Three is Eight months upwards. To illustrate: during phase one Baby will be encouraged by the gym to look upwards and turn their heads from side to side to see the toys that can be placed close to them. The toys can be repositioned to maintain baby's interest and Galt provide two spare links so that other toys can be attached- very different to some other gyms that state only the toys provided should be used. We received the nest when Baby CrazyEgg was at phase two- able to control her head and sit with some support. The nest and some additional cushions provided this. The soft toys were positioned further away and she could reach up to bat and grab them. A word of caution here: we found that the gym often partially collapsed. The connectors would release their grip on the rods at various places, and cause the gym to lose its dome-shape. No harm was done since the rods are fully encased in their fabric supports, but Baby CrazyEgg did kick up a fuss when the chime bird invaded her personal space with his big beady eye staring at her, unblinkingly. Phase three, our current phase, demands that the gym attachments be removed. Baby CrazyEgg can sit unaided and is very steady, but very occasionally overbalances. In the nest she can overbalance in any direction and no harm is done! She has also been known to shuffle down so that her head and bottom are wedged in the centre and her legs are waving madly above her as she emits cries of protest. I think her efforts to right herself may have helped her progress in that she can now push herself up to sitting from a 45 degree angle, but obviously this is one reason why Babies should be supervised whilst in the nest. It is perhaps worth noting here that unlike some other models of nest, this one has an integrated, padded mat that covers the floor where the hole in the ring is. This means Baby cannot get wedged between the nest and the floor, the nest being over her face, no names mentioned (new-fangled Mothercare cat nest chair thing). Baby CrazyEgg is now much more interested in the farm scenes shown. She also likes to sit outside the nest and put things in it. This is good by way of household tidiness, but bad in the sense that a bit of plastic broccoli is uncomfortable to sit on when Mummy neglects to remove it. So Baby CrazyEgg says anyway. The Galt instructions say that the nest can also be used for imaginative play with the nest becoming a boat or a flying saucer. This will come later. Although Baby CrazyEgg is currently asleep in the nest in the last 24 hours I have witnessed the beginning of the end for its daily usage. Yesterday, following the 'brocolli up the bottom incident' the offending vegetable was cast out of the nest. Then Baby CrazyEgg decided she wanted it back. She began reaching, and then fell forward, and then- and this was new- got her legs repositioned and pushed. Supported by the nest she was able to reach a bit further, and a bit further, and then she sort of slid halfway out before being scooped up and rescued. So, if your Baby is on the fast track to crawling you probably won't get such long term usage as we have had. They will just climb out. Maintenance The fabric is fully washable. Despite three previous owners and many journeys through the washing machine, the colours on the nest remain uber-bright. The inflatable part can be wiped down with anti-bacterial wipes if necessary. Cost This retails as a play nest and gym for around £40, or the nest alone for around £25. Having seen how useful it has been I would not have begrudged paying this amount. A really well thought out, long lasting quality product. Thank you for reading. ©CrazyEgg 2012 Read the complete review |
