I had my first child in February 2012. I have a three year old niece so many of her toys and bits and pieces were passed down to my daughter. However, when my daughter was about 10 weeks old, I was browsing local bargain finder on eBay when I came across the Fisher Price Rainforest Gym at a bargain price. I decided to bid on the item and eventually won it at £3.47. I had to drive to the next town from me Canterbury to collect but all in all, I was very pleased with my bargain.
What is a baby gym?
The idea of a baby gym is that it provides and safe and comfortable place for your baby to lie whilst enjoying visual and musical stimulation. The Fisher Price Rainforest baby gym has, as you can imagine a rainforest theme which is great as it can be used for either a boy or a girl - perfect if you are planning on having more than one child as you can put it away for the next baby regardless of whether it will be the same sex as the first
As I already mentioned, I managed to get this baby gym for the bargain price of £3.47 on eBay but I have had a quick look around online and have found that Amazon are currently selling it for £37.12.
The Fisher Price Rainforest Gym
This is one of only a few baby items that can actually be used from birth. The Fisher Price Rainforest Gym is very easy to put together, you basically have a mat at the bottom to which you attach the over head bars through small slots in the mat. The mat is silky around the edges and very soft so it's lovely for your baby to lie on. The mat has bright and colourful arches that sit over the top of the mat, at the base of one of the arches is a lovely looking Giraffe and inside here is where the batteries go which is great as its actually part of the toy.
There are plastic rings that hang from the arches which you can attach the various jungle animals to. These animals include a really soft monkey, a toucan which jingles, an elephant and a parrot which has a paddle that spins. Other features include a shiny mirror and a leaf that is crinkly all over.
The idea is that both moveable and stationary toys encourage your baby to explore and play with the overhead gym. Another bonus of the mat is that it can also be used for tummy time.
Finally as part of the battery operated part of the toy there are flashing lights that play overhead along with the music. From memory I think there are four different songs that play and also jungle themes. The music can either be played on a loop or is motion activated.
Mine and Molly's Opinion
I absolutely love this baby gym and so did Molly. I love the fact that it can be used from birth although we didn't start using this until Molly was around 10 weeks old. It is very reassuring to know that you baby can lay safely somewhere whilst also knowing that they will not become bored with all the interesting toys to look at and play with. Molly really enjoying playing with the monkey that hangs from the overhead bars by his tail. I used to pop to the kitchen to make a cup of tea and she would be half way across the front room where she has been hanging off the monkey's tail and had moved herself. Molly also really enjoyed the mirror and we would often find her holding it in both hands and licking it - strange but true!
I would highly recommend this as a baby product. I love the fact that it is suitable from birth so you actually end up getting quite a lot of usage out of it as Molly used this until she has at least 6 months old and could have probably used it for longer. One downside of this product is that is does take up a fair amount of floor space but to be honest, most baby items such as this usually do and it is just something you have to accept when you become a parent. This baby gym is a great safe place for your baby to lie while also having plenty of visual stimulation. It helps to encourage your baby to feel things and get used to different sounds which is great. Another highlight is the fact that the mat can be washed which is pretty much compulsory for any baby item as it means you can keep it nice and fresh for your little one. My only other slight grumble is that I think it is quite expensive but to be honest, I have bought virtually all my baby item second hand and as you can see I have saved myself a small fortune alone on just this toy. Personally I can thoroughly recommend this toy, my one piece of advice would be to try and make sure that you get it second hand to save on cost.
This is a lovely, bright, colourful play mat with plenty to entertain the baby. It has 4 hanging animals to play with and a giraffe on one of the arms. Some leaves hang below the centre above which are 4 lights which can be set to flash or fade in and out. Sounds can be set either to jungle animal sounds or music. While the music is fun, the jungle sounds are far less irritating! The lights in particular held my baby's attention for a long time. The base of the mat can easily be taken off to wash which is useful. We used this play mat for 3 children and by the third, the music function had a slight fault and would play at double speed sometimes. I have recently spoken to somebody else who had the same problem. Apart from this, it has lasted well. The structure packs flat and can easily be transported which is another plus point. There are a range of jungle themed nursery items which match it.
I purchased the rain forest gym for my daughter and she looks the gym. The gym has a big mat and which is nice and soft and big enough for my daughter to play and kick around on the gym. The gym has rain forest sounds and and lights and the attachable rain forest toys are bright colours and my daughter loves playing with the toys. There are lots of loops all around the gym which you can add to. i added some other toys to the gym to make it more interesting for my daughter. The battery compartment is hidden away by the giraffe. The part of the gym can lift up to access the battery compartment, then hidden away so your child doesn't know its there.
The gym can me folded in half and stored away and doesn't take up much space but you need to make sure you have a big enough area to store the gym. The gym is a little pricey but well worth the money.
So this is a little bit dearer than the average play mat, but it does have lights and sounds. When babies are young there eye sight is not very good, so the moving lights above their heads really captures their attention far better than the toys.
When they start to get a little bit older, 3 or 4 months, and they start to bat and grab at things, there are plenty of bright colored toys for them to play with.
The mat itself is nice and soft for them to lie on, and I have put mine in the washing machine to clean it up with no problems.
There are two sound options, a rattle mode, where the music and sounds start up in response to the baby hitting at it, which is great from about 4 or 5 months. Or you can just have the music playing, it takes about 20 minutes to run through before you have to start it again and I would find after about 20 mins my daughter had had enough anyway and we had to move onto something else.
When purchasing a new baby gym there were a few qualities i was looking for, it had to be bright and colourful, have music and lights and most importantly provide a safe haven for baby to have tummy time and batting time. Although a little bit pricey i believe that this gym offers full value for money and has been one of the best purchases we have made for our child.
This gym offers a vast variety of textures and activities which constantly keeps baby occupied. With the mat there are lots of hanging jungle animals for example an elephant, toucan, parrot and soft monkey and the flexibility of moving the animals to different positions makes it new every day. You can also purchase and add other animals if you wanted to. My daughter loved wriggling away to the catchy music and the lights help to capture her attention.
Once this gym has been set up it is very easy to fold away without having to dismantle the bars, this making it a very simple to use and store away when not in use.
I absolutely loved the look of this baby gym and was determined I was going to get it despite the hefty price tag. I managed to get one second hand for £25 but I must say after owning the item I would pay the full price without hesitation.
The Rainforest theme is unisex so suitable for either a boy or a girl. There are lots of animals including a giraffe, parrot, monkey and more. Each hanging toy has it's own special touch, for example a squeak, rattle or crinkle. You can move the hanging toys around to wherever you want, just unclip and clip on in the position you want. This means they can also be removed and played with separately or clipped onto a buggy or car seat.
There is a double arch which crosses over at the top and it I'd underneath this, in the line of baby's vision, that some flashing lights are situated and also where the music comes from and battery compartment is.
The mat itself is brightly coloured, again with a range of animals and textures for tummy time play. The mat is easily remove able and can be put in the washing machine at 40 degrees, which I needed to do a lot, having a baby with reflux.
My baby adored this gym and would play underneath it for ages without getting bored as there was so much to keep him entertained, always something new to explore.
I was sad to part with it in the end and I would definitely recommend this to other parents.
There are so many things to buy for a new baby that quite often toys aren't on the top of the list of things to get. However with both my daughters a play gym is something we wanted from the start and with our first we got a really cheap one that she showed no interest in until she was about 6 months old and so it was used for a really short period of time, I guess you get what you pay for! So second time round we wanted to spend a little more to get alot more....the fisher price rainforest gym definitely fit this!
When looking around for a play gym we came across so many but I was drawn to the bright colours and the rainforest theme of this gym. Its widely available online and in childrens stores everywhere. We got ours from boots and it cost around £50 although I'm sure if you shop around you could get it cheaper as £50 is quite steep in my opinion. Thankfully it was worth the price tag!
The playgym consists of a large square playmat with a really brightly coloured rainforest design on it and then two plastic fabric covered archs that cross to make a frame over the mat. In the centre of the mat is a light box that contains 4 lights that can be seen by baby when they are laid on the mat. The box with lights on also plays music in time with the lights. Across the arches are fabric loops that hold 4 different toys.
The mat is a lovely fabric and silky all around the edges. The bright design is very eye catching for baby especially during tummy time. Theres even a peekaboo crinkly leaf for baby to lift up to reveal more. The animals are really sweet colourful characters and I love the waterfall design. There is also coloured loops around the mat to allow you to hook on the toys.
The arches and toys-
The arches slot into holes on the mat really easily and sit diagonally across the mat. One side of an arch has a lovely soft stuffed giraffe up it which conceals the battery box. The other arch has a pretty rainbow fabric covering it. The fabric loops hold a really cute monkey thats easy to remove and for baby to pull down. Theres also a purple toucan which rattles and again is remove able. The last two toys that comes with the playmat are an elephant with a turning plastic section on the bottom and a similar toy but with a parrot. All the toys that come with the mat are lovely quality and I Love that you can remove them and move them around or take them with you. The plastic loops on the toys make them easy to hook them on and off and make them great to hook onto the pram etc.
The lights and music-
This has to be my favourite part of this mat. The 4 lights switch on and off in time with the music or jungle sounds and can be flashing fast or slow and more soothing for baby. Its the part of the playgym that kept my daughter entertained from around a month old as most babies love flashing lights. There are 3 settings for the music and lights ; on constantly music, on constantly jungle sounds and comes on when baby hits or kicks the gym which is great for slightly older babies starting to learn cause and affect.
Around the light box hang some fabric jungle leaves that add to the theme but I'm not sure they add much else in all honesty.
Overall we love this gym. Its a little pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. Its versatile, good quality and eyecatching.
~~~ Background ~~~
I am continuing my quest to analyse many of the products we used in the first couple of years of our daughter's life. I am categorising items as near necessities, those that would be "nice to have", and those that one could really do without.
This baby gym is another item I received from a friend. Our daughter was the third or fourth child to use it, and it came to us in good repair although a couple of the removable objects were missing. I wonder if the photographed item is a newer version, as ours did not have any lights or the overhanging rotating thing.
~~~ The product and my thoughts ~~~
Fisher Price Rainforest Gym
This item comes in sturdy clear plastic packaging and comprises of a play mat, two fairly long bars that form two arches, and several rainforest-themed toys. It requires minimal construction: the placement of the overhead bars into each of the prefabricated holes located in each corner.
The gym is designed for both tummy time and for "batting" play. The play mat itself - also obviously rainforest-themed - is reportedly machine-washable, although I did so by hand in luke-warm water. It is fairly well padded however we always used it on top of a thick floor rug. The quilted mat has various items encompassed within it or attached to it, such as a leaf that makes a crinkling sound when touched, a mirror, several hoops for the attachment of specific small soft toys.
The arches in our model have premade holes - similar to button holes in which to attach plastic rings to which in turn can have the supplied small toys attached. These holes are located at different places along the arches, meaning that the toys can be placed within or outwith the baby's reach as desired. The supplied toys include a toucan, a monkey and a parrot. We also had an Elmo - presumably my friend had included this as a bonus item!
Millie used this play gym from about three weeks old until just under six months. We found it to be a safe and interesting place for her to play and sometimes to sleep.
It has now been sometime since we returned this gym play mat back to its rightful owner. I cannot remember all the details about the available music or sounds, but I do know that our daughter was ultimately not a great fan.
When Millie was first able to, she often fiddled with the sliding on/off music switch. I assumed that she was simply exploring. However the glare she gave me at age five and a half months when she did a commando crawl u-turn towards the gym told me otherwise. Millie had "crawled" off the gym towards a ball sitting several metres away. As she left the gym she switched the sound off. I turned it back on after 20 or 30 seconds. It transpired that she obviously hated the music as she headed straight for the on/off slider, switched it off, glared at me again and then continued her exploration of the room. At five and a half months old!

Yes - but you may wish to play a variety of sounds and music instead of that provided.
This is a review of Fisher Price Rainforest Gym which we were bought when our first daughter was born. We have unboxed it again for the arrival of our second little darling to use now she is here with us.
What is it?
A baby gym provides a comfortable and safe place for baby to lie whilst enjoying visual and musical stimulation. This one is rainforest themed which is a popular nursery theme for decorating. We don't have any other rainforest themed toys or decoration but this one was bought for us by my sister in law.
The Fisher Price Rainforest Gym is easy to assemble, with a silky base (which we have washed) that has items that rustle, ribbons to feel and textures to enjoy on it all in keeping with the jungle theme. Four supports go from each corner, one major one being the giraffe base which hides the batteries. Toys dangle from each post which keep baby amused.
In addition to the giraffe support there is an orange monkey who dangles by his tail from a joist, he is totally removable and it's a miracle we still have him as our daughter has played with him for two years but he is still there in the toy bucket! A blue elephant rattle also hangs (but is detachable) from the joist and he was the one thing that really caught DD1's eye. She would smile at the blue elephant for ages. Lights also gently flash in the umbrella of the gym and are a nice distraction for the baby. Perhaps quite irritating is the music which can be played on a loop or is motion activated. It's OK at first but I soon got fed up of hearing the animal themed tunes that were part of the battery operated action.
This Fisher Price Rainforest Gym is not cheap. I know the SIL paid around £50 for it but it is in Argos for £40 at the moment.
A lot of toys are not safe for young babies so it's nice to have a toy that they can use from birth. We used ours an awful lot the first time round and will be assembling it in the next week or so for our new baby to enjoy. I do think it is a bit pricey for the amount of time you use it (we gave up after around 5 months as she was crawling off it). I have seen the Fisher Price Rainforest Gym in a few play centres so it is obviously a hugely popular toy to buy.
This is a lovely toy for babies to enjoy and it gives them some stimulation on a level they can enjoy. I just check it's not too draughty on the floor before putting the baby on it and will often lie alongside her to share the experience and enjoy some bonding time. It needs to go on carpet really as it has a little padding but not much. The colours and attention to detail are stunning for this baby gym but I would really expect that for the price paid.
This is one of the best toys I bought my baby! I got this on Amazon for £45, and this was a great price as I had seen it in a few shops like Boots and Mothercare for nearly £60. This rainforest gym is a play mat which has two bars going to either corner, to create a little 'den', and when your baby lies on the mat and looks up its suppose to look like he's in the jungle.
The actual mat that your baby lies on is nice and soft and feels really comfortable, my son often falls asleep on it for a nap after playing in this gym for a while. It is covered in colourful animals, the sun, trees etc. This mat is great for when your baby is having tummy time, as there is just so much to look at, and so much bright colour to keep them interested.
On the edges of the mat are soft material hooks, which you can attach toys to, so your baby can reach out to them whilst on their tummy. This mat has really helped my little man roll over, as he rolled over from his front to his back for the first time last week whilst stretching to reach for a toy! This mat detatches from the rest of the gym, which is so handy, it is machine washable and it can go in the dryer, my son is sick all over it pretty much every day!
The mat in one corner has a huge green leaf, which crinkles and my son loves this noise, he is always touching and pulling it. The bars slot into the mat in each corner really easily, but I don't think a baby would work out how to get them off so they are a good design, the bars have a large circle on the bottom of them, and there is a slit just like on a coat where a button would slot in, these bars just slot in the slit on the mat just like a button.
In the middle where the bars meet is where the music and lights are, there is a button on the top to activate them. There are a few different settings, you can have loud music or there is a quieter setting. You can have music, or jungle sounds. There is a setting for the music to be on continuously, or a setting that only comes on when the mat is moved, which is for the baby to learn that when they shake the mat they can make it make a noise. My son is only 6 months old and doesn't understand to do this yet, so we have the music on continuously when he's on the mat, which runs for about 15 - 20 minutes before it goes off.
The jungle sounds are really relaxing to listen to, my son often falls asleep to this. The lights are in the middle where the bar meets too, and they just flash different colours, my son always watches these, he's fascinated with lights! The only thing is with this mat, is you can't have just music or just lights, you have to have them on both together. That's the only thing I can criticise this mat on, it is perfect other wise!
There are hooks on the bars for toys to hang on, so they dangle down above your baby for them to play with. This mat comes with toys but there are extra hooks to add your own toys, and you can remove the toys that it comes with. In one corner of the mat there is a big giraffe which my son loves looks at, and in its mouth is a mirror dangling down, which is my sons favourite toy in this gym.
There is also a parrot where you can spin the bottom of it, a set of leaves on a ring, and an elephant which has a ball with beads in it that you can spin too, and a soft monkey. Also at the top are two butterflies which spin when your baby moves them. The toys are very good quality and we often take them off and attach them to his pram or car seat when we go out as he loves them so much.
This mat requires 3 C batteries for the music and lights, and in 6 months I have only had to change them twice, and he uses this everyday. I would highly recommend this mat, it is has been such a good toy and I can see my son playing on it for a long time yet! He absolutely loves it, and it can be transported from room to room so easily, the bars fold together too, to transport easier and store away flat. I would not be without this mat, it is expensive but an amazing toy for a baby!
We bought this gym when I was pregnant. We didn't want to know what gender we were having so were looking for something neutral. We came across the Fisher Price rainforest collection and were taken with it immediately. The bright colours and fun characters looked ideal for both boys and girls. We bought this along with several other rainforest products.
The gym comes packed in a clear carry case which can be used to pack the gym back in when taking out and about. The actual product consists of a mat of about 60cm square, two arches which cross over each other with a large giraffe in one corner to hold the batteries (this takes 3 C batteries) and several hanging toys (A soft monkey which hangs from it's tail, A blue elephant with a spinning rattle, a soft toucan with a bell inside, a large orange mirror and a plastic toucan with a spinner) In the crossover of the arches there is a control box which can be used to play either the 4 tunes (calypso style lullabies) or the rainforest sounds. The sounds will play for 20 minutes before automatically turning off. There are also four lights which flash in time to the music and two silk hanging butterflies which don't spin although it's implied they do.
This mat can be used from birth although my son at that age just wasn't interested in it and would cry pretty much straight after being put down. As he has grown up and started reaching for things, he has become more interested in this and will happily lie and bat the hanging toys. these toys are lovely bright colours and chunky which are ideal for little hands although at the moment he seems to enjoy the ones which make noise. The fact you can change them about and even change them for other hanging toys means this will keep interest for a lot longer.
The songs can be a bit repetitive given that there's only 4, but the calypso style is something a little different from the usual annoying sounds these types of toys play. If the sounds get too annoying, we switch to the rainforest sounds which seem to calm him well.
The mat can also be used for tummy time, although padded I found it wasn't quite thick enough for use on my laminate floor so I put another mat under this which seemed to work well. It also absorbed all the dribble and sick which my boy produced while doing tummy time. This mat can also be popped in the washing machine if these get too much. Although I haven't done so yet, it looks like it's made of quality materials so hopefully will wash well.
It can take up a lot of space when being used but the fact you can fold it away is ideal. The only problem we had with folding away was that we couldn't get the attachable leaves to fold in so they ended up poking out the bag and they got bent very easily. This is only a minor niggle though and doesn't detract from the plus points.
All in all, this is a lovely bright playmat which I think was one of the best buys we made. It has had a lot of use already with our two month old and looks like it will be used for a long time to come.
We purchased this before our baby was born not knowing if we were having a boy or a girl. This gym is unisex and looks very appealing. It has lots of bright colours and activities on it based on a jungle theme, there are attachments of an orange plastic mirror, fabric toucan which has a silky textured beak, elephant with clear plastic barrel that has coloured beads in which makes a noise when hit. Also a plastic parrot which has a spin round perch and an orange monkey with silky tail. All of these attachments can be hooked onto various points on the bars and also there are fabric hooks on the mat for use when baby is having tummy time, as well as a crinkly leaf. The gym has lights in the centre which flash and 2 butterflies, this is where the music comes from, you can have a choice of rainforest music or tunes which each last for about 20 minutes with 2 volume levels. There is also the option of the music being activated by baby moving the gym when kicking about or batting things. My daughter absolutely loves this gym, as a newborn it was a great place to lay her and she would look at the lights while listening to gentle rainforest music and sometimes fall asleep! Now at 8 1/2 months old she is still using it to roll about on and as there are many hooks i have attached some of her other favourite toys to it which she loves.
Although quite expensive for a play gym at around £55 it was definitely worth it as we are still getting use of it now on a daily basis. It can fold in half and slide behind a sofa and so does not take up a lot of space.
Finding toys that are relevant for toddlers for more than 3 weeks can be quite challenging, before our little one was born we saw this and thought it looked bright, colourful and fun whilst introducing animals which is something we wanted the babe to enjoy from an early age.
Although the price has now reduced to £49.99, we bought our baby gym for £59.99 from Amazon, when it arrived it came in a large rectangular box. Immediately it was clear this was quite a cool piece of baby equipment and so we set about building it.
==Putting it all together==
The item is easy to put together, it comes with a colourful mat with lots of jungle and animal prints on it, some tubes which you fit together into the main top stanchion and a giraffe which sits on one of the tubes holding batteries for the music and lights which emit from the top stanchion. Putting this together took about 10 minutes, and it was easy and trouble free with good instructions and clear diagrams.
You need 3 C batteries to make the gym work fully, although it can still be fun without these, the mat takes up 83cm x 83cm x 50cm and we've found it easier to leave it out in babies room than put it away after each use.
==What you get for your money==
The mat is soft and padded and large enough for a babe up to 9-12 months to roll around on, it is covered in forest type pictures such as zebras, lakes and other things, the zebra's tail sticks out of the mat which is a nice touch and the mat is washable so can deal with any baby regurgitation tricks with ease.
The giraffe does nothing except hold a mirror in his mouth, the upper stanchions have little loops which hold a spinning parrot toy, a cuddly monkey who holds himself up by his tail, a toucan and a spinning elephant toy which rattles when hit.
Finally at the top, is the control stanchion, switch it on and it will play music, or jungle noises and flashing lights will emit from the top of the contraption keeping baby bewitched for what seems like hours (but is generally 15-20 minutes!!!).
I liked the look of this but baulked at the price, but looking back, we've used this since 2 months and it is a handy way to provide distraction to a baby and help them develop their sensory perceptions, grabbing at things, hearing what they do, watching the lights, listening to the music, feeling different textures, the mat still works at 9 months, although now our little one can grab the toys easily whilst on their back I think we won't use it for much longer.
This has been really good value for us, it is a perfect out when we are both tired and can lay babe down and let them entertain themselves for a while, the happy gurgling and continued interest in the toys shows it was a great buy.
We own a lot of lamaze toys which we sometimes place in the loops to give baby new overhead toys to play with and this is easy to do, it means they get extra use out of the gym with new and wonderful toys, this has worked every time we've done it, and baby really loves the mat, its good for tummy time, good for enjoying the colours and sounds and its only limitations are the space it takes up really, which we accounted for, but many might not be able to.
Overall an expensive but very worthwhile purchase which has lasted as long as we could have hoped and we've got real good value out of it.
We had £20's worth of Mothercare vouchers we got from a friend as a present when Freya was born and had been in a few times to see if there was anything we could buy. As much as I love Mothercare, the clothes in there are ridiculously over priced so needless to say the voucher went unused for a few weeks. We had bought a Mamas and Papas playmat/gym from a local buy and sell page on Facebook but it just didn't seem to interest Freya enough, so we started having a look around for a new one which looked a bit more exciting.
That's when we spotted the Fisher Price Rainforest Gym! Even when it was wrapped up in the packaging it still stood out on the shelf as one of the brightest and fun looking playmats. I looked at the price tag of £57.99 but thought with the £20 Mothercare vouchers that we should go for it, in the hope that Freya would get £57.99's worth of play out of it! haha!
The mat itself is so bright and colourful, the scene is of a river in the jungle which leads to a lovely bright smiling sun at the top of the mat. The colours are mainly green what with it being a jungle, with lovely blues for the sky and water, yellows, reds and whites for the animals. The outer rim of the play mat has a satin finish which is super soft and a lovely touch. The smiling sun has little ribbons around him which your little one can touch when it's tummy time. When Freya is on her tummy she really loves looking at all the colours and gurgles away a a happy faces looking up at her on the mat.
The toys included with the rainforest gym are a blue elephant with soft silky ears and a rolling rattle in his tummy, an orange mirror, a brightly coloured parrot with a spinner underneath it, a happy looking monkey which can be hung from the loops or coiled around the bars and a purple toucan with a rainbow beak. Each of the toys (apart from the monkey) have plastic rings which can be easily hooked onto any of the fabric loops on the arch bars or on the floor mat loops. On the underside of the gum there are also silk covered butterflies which can be spun around, it would have been a nice touch if the butterflies moved around on their own but this isn't the case.
The bars which arch over the top of the mat are covered in patterned fabric to blend in, one bar is covered in a leaf pattern keeping in theme with the jungle and the other is a rainbow pattern. There are 6 loops for you to hang the toys from in various locations for your little one to play with, and an extra loop hanging from a rather bright yellow Giraffe which resides in a corner of the mat. He also has a large leaf at his feet which makes a crunchy-crinkly sound when touched. There are also several loops on the floor mat which you can hook the toys onto for more fun when it's tummy time! The bars loop over the mat and are connected in the middle to the green box which houses the lights and music! The underside of which has 4 lights which flash according to which setting is on, this is what your baby can see when lay on their back. On the top of this box are 2 switches and a small speaker for the music and sounds to come out, I personally think it would have been better if the sounds were released onto the underside of the mat with the lights, as sometimes the sounds can be drowned out a bit by general house noise or the TV.
Everything comes in a large plastic carry pack which has a plastic handle and press studs to keep it closed, the plastic case is brilliant when you need to pack it away or are taking it somewhere. We pack it up to take to Freya's Nanna's when she goes there for the day.
So is there anything wrong with this mat? Unfortunately yes, there are a few things I wasn't really happy with. The advertisement and details on the packaging stated that there was 20 minutes worth of music, I thought wow that's awesome! How disappointed was I when it turns out that the music PLAYS for 20minutes but REPEATS the same songs several times. Needless to say I pretty much despise the music the mat plays now it drives me nuts! The good thing however is you can easily switch the jungle sounds on instead which are much more soothing and nice to listen to.
Another downside for me was that there just isn't enough toys, I have other toys I have attached to the loops to make it more fuller looking and Freya seems to prefer this. The last thing I'm not happy with is the fact at how loose the bars are getting, the more I pack it up and unpack it the looser things are getting and the bigger Freya gets the more she is going to pull on things so I'm starting to think there may not be much more play out of it, maybe another couple of months at most?!
If you don't mind repetitive music then this mat is for you, yes it's a little on the expensive side but it's really worth it as compared to most play gyms it really is the best looking and is of good quality. I've seen the gym in loads of places now so shop around and you might find a bargain!
I'd wanted the tiny love play gym like I'd had for my other two but got given this as a present and I'm so glad. This playgym has lots of different things for baby as he/she grows, at the moment my baby is 6weeks old and we've had the gym since he was 2 weeks and I would place him in the centre of the mat and the flashing lights caught his eye there are also 2 hanging butterflies that you can spin round and these were an eye catcher too, however I do think it would be good if there was a setting that would spin them round by itself but my older kids dont mind doing that job!! It has 5 detachable toys, 1 being a mirror, a noisy elephant with sqwishy ears good to hold and play with once baby can hold, a spiny toy, a parrot with rattle inside and a monkey with texture tail. The giraffee which holds the batteries is also a favourite of my sons (batteries dont come with this so remember to buy some!!!!) Lots of hoops to hook these toys to so you can vary where you put toys depending on favourites and babies age i suppose! The mat is lovely and colourfull and would be good for tummy time if you do not want to buy a seperate tummy time mat with a towel to prop baby up a bit! Aswell as the lights there is rainforest sounds or music depending what you and baby feel like listening to and also two different options of volume. and best of all mat is washable :)
Melodies and Lights Rainforest Gym comes with lots of cute characters! Baby can enjoy the magical fun and explore something different each time as toys can be repositioned! Lights above babys head flash and there is 8-20 minutes of music to add to the fun! Let baby develop motor skills in a wonderful setting!
