Advantages: You know where your child is

Disadvantages: none

Playpens are a god send! They can provide a safe environment for a young child to play in and for parents to know where the child is and no harm can come to them. That is of course only suitable toys are in with the child and the child isn't able to climb out!

I have a travel cot which I use as a playpen, it is a mothercare basinette, travel cot/playpen. I find it really useful for my child to play and take naps in. It all folds up into a bag which is great for travelling or taking with you to a friends ro family house. It came with a changing mat that fits on top, and for babies who are aged from birth to around 3 months, there is a netted section which fits on so that they baby isn't right in the bottom of the cot. Its all very easy to put together and really handy!
Playpens come in all different shapes and size and some aren't suitable for naps and some are only suitable for certain ages.

I would recommend anyone with a young child or expecting a baby to purchase a playpen or a travel cot/playpen as when yor child gets to the age of of rolling/crawling etc it is a very useful tool so that you know where they are! You can turn your back for 2 seconds and your baby has dissapeared from the spot where you placed them and they have rolled across the room!!

Obviously the playpen isn't a childminder and your child shouldn't be left in it all day everyday and of course you should keep checking in on them! I knew someone who used to get up, feed their baby, plonk them in the playpen and that was it, no stimulation or anything, just got the little one out to feed and change. Obviously your child still needs love, attention, interaction and stimulation to develop properly but they also need to learn to play on their own for little periods of time.

Summary: A really useful tool for parents!!!
