Advantages: Safe place to play
Disadvantages: takes up a lot of space
In the corner of my sitting room is a wooden cage. It is a wooden playpen about 3foot by 3foot. In it is a small duvet which is comfy to sit on. A cusion from the back of an old armchair which is comfy to fall on and a selection of toys. This is a safe environment for my baby to go in. You may think it is mean to cage up a baby but I tell you it is the best thing for my baby. You may ask why? At 8 months old my baby can move. If I put her on the floor at my feet before I know it she is in another room in floods of tears because she doesn't know her way back to me. I go on a hunt and find her. As safe as I try to make my house I have other children with small toys and belongings. I could try to keep them away all the time but I always miss something. Not only does my baby move she also put things in her mouth. Every thing my daughter gets hold of is straight in her mouth, quite normal for a baby. Needless to say my house is a dangerous place for my baby. I could spend all day every day playing with my baby and watching her every move but that is hardly practical so I have to be able to put her in a safe place while I do other things. The playpen is the safe place for her. Does she enjoy the play pen you may ask and the answer is sometimes. At times she will play happily with toys or pull herself up to standing with the bars and be quite happy. When she finds herself alone in the room and unable to escape then she starts to complain. When my baby no longer needs a playpen I find that it is still a useful piece of furniture in my home. At christmas I will put the christmas tree on a table in the play pen, it is stopped from child attack and the presents are all contained in the cage. The play pen I have is folds up neatly to store away when out of use but I will never part with it as I am sure I will be able to find lots of occasions to use it. I have had our playpen since my
first child was born and it is still going strong.

- 18/06/01 I always put our luggage in the playpen the night before we go camping. That way I know nothing will go walkabout before we pack the car. |

- 18/06/01 I have a travel cot which often used to double up as a playpen. When you need somewhere to put your child safely its a brill idea > i feel you have the balance right |

- 18/06/01 I know exactly what you mean about 'cage'. I could never bring myself to have a playpen but I know I made myself a great deal of extra work by not having one! |
