Advantages: My kids LOVE it

Disadvantages: I HATE it!

My twins have just had their first birthday and Christmas, so we were inundated with our very kind friends and relatives wanting to know what to buy for them As parents, we wanted nice classic wooden toys - the sort that would look stylish and last for generations. Unfortunately, we also knew that what our kids wanted were toys made of brightly-coloured plastic that played teeth-grinding tunes all day long. This was where the Vtech Baby Walker came in....

Vtech are an electronics company that make teaching toys for oung children. As far as I'm aware they have quite a good reputation as far as quality goes.

The baby walker itself comprises of an A frame with a detachable board. The board fits tightly to the frame. The idea is for babies that are standing to use the frame to scoot about until they feel confident enough to walk unaided. It's supposed to build up their confidence in walking and aid development.

The activity board has some plastic cogs that can be twirled (to aid manual dexterity), a plastic butterfly, whose wings can be flapped (same reason) and a variety of other buttons to be pressed. I find that my little boy uses it as a walking frame while his sister (who hates stading up) uses the activity board. Everything emits some kind of tune when it is touched or pressed. This brings me to my main gripe. I HATE the tunes this toy makes!

On the face of it, this should be a great toy. Bright plastic, helps them walk, the kids love it - all good. The real down side is the tunes. There are quite a few and they are all the catchiest, most irritating tunes ever! If you hear one in the morning you will be humming it for the rest of the day. The toy does have an 'On/Off' button, but my kids figured out how to turn it back on after I'd turned it off!

The stroller takes four AA batteries (not included) and these have lasted a month so far with no signs of giving up. It is priced around the £20-25 mark and can be bought from most toy stockists.

When you buy it you need to do some basic construction, nothing too tricky, and there are instructions to show you how to do this and how everything works.

I'm giving the Vtech walker four stars as I think that generally it is a good toy. It helps your child's development, is of good quality construction and looks like it is going to last. I've knocked a star off for the irritating tunes!

Summary: Great toy, dreadful tunes!
