Advantages: disposable, easy to remove

Disadvantages: expensive

1) Huggies Little Swimmers

I wanted to start taking my baby swimming at a young age so I started looking around for ‘swim nappies’. These seemed the obvious choice, mostly as they were the only ones I could see in my local Boots.

They are disposable and are more like a pull up pant than a nappy making them a little more difficult to put on. They have an absorbent part which absorbs wee very well without a great deal of ‘swelling’. They also have a waterproof outer part so the swimming pool water isn’t absorbed.

On the plus side they have rip down side seams for easy removal and you then just throw them away – meaning no transporting of wet pant home, no washing or drying. They also have a high waist so less likelihood of leakage out the top. They have elasticated legs, which seemed to fit well and stop leakage out the leg holes.

They are also neat enough to fit underneath my daughter’s swimming costume. However you can use them on there own so you don’t actually need a swimming costume. But she does look soooo cute in her costume!!

On the minus side the smallest size they come in fits a 16lb baby. I didn’t notice this until I got them home (duh – I just looked at the small bit and thought they must fit) and my baby was much smaller than this at the time. Because of this I started looking around for other swim pants and started using the floaties aquanappy which I am actually more happy with (see my review of these!)

As they are disposable you have to throw them away and this makes them a lot more expensive if you plan to swim regularly. However for a spare pair of swim pant – on the beach etc – you can’t go wrong with them.

£4.99 for 12

2)Floaties Aquanappy

I brought these when I realised that Huggies Little swimmers didn’t come in small enough sizes for my baby.

You can buy them either as
trunks or as a bikini for little girls. They are fairly soft on the outside with somekind of PVC lining. The legs and waist are fully elasticated and have a waist tie to adjust the fit. I find they have always fit my baby very well and I have not yet had any embrassing leaks. They also seem to fit well as your baby grows. My baby is almost out of her first pair and they still fit as well now as they ever did. Not only that they still look and feel the same as when I first brought them, but I am quite careful about rinising them as soon as we come out of the pool and washing them when I get home.

The smallest size fits a 9lb baby so you can start swimming when your baby is very young.

The downside is that you do have to wash them (they are machine washable) but you can’t put them in the tumble dryer. They do take a while to dry on the line though so for holiday time it is best to have more than one pair or invest in some disposables.

They can also be a little difficult to get off when wet when they are getting a little small

Also I think that they are slightly more expensive than other reuseable swim nappies but much cheaper than disposables in the long run.

Price:£9.98 - trunks
£13.98 - bikini style

On another note a leaflet you might find useful (I did) is from

Little Swimmers,
Making a Splash,
PO BOX 951,
Bucks,
SL9 9UN.

It has advice on taking your baby swimming and where to find baby friendly pools. You need to enclose an A5 SAE but I thought it was worth it.
