Advantages: Good value for money

Disadvantages: Sometimes more than one wipe comes out

BACKGROUND

As I have a one year old baby I use a lot of baby wipes, not only when changing her nappy, but when cleaning her up after food. I also find them ideal for using when my little boy has his paints out – they are ideal for getting the paint of him before he touches anything!!

As you can imagine I get through a fair few packs. I found that the branded ones were very expensive, so I needed something that was cheaper.

Whilst buying nappies in my local Asda store, I saw that ‘George’ produced baby wipes, so I bought a pack to try.

PRODUCT

The wipes that I bought were George Baby Cotton Soft Fragrance Free baby wipes. There are 80 wipes in a pack and they cost £1.24, although they do occasionally have a special offer of two packs for £2. They also sell them in a pack of four for £3.84.

As you can imagine at a price of £1.24 for a pack of 80 they are less than half the price of the well known brands, which sell for about £2.50 for a pack of 80. This is a definite plus point for these wipes in my opinion.

Reading the back of the packet, it tells me that these wipes are (quoted from the back of the pack);

• Enriched with baby lotion to help prevent the causes of nappy rash;
• Soft and thick with gentle cleansers and moisturisers to care for baby’s delicate skin;
• Ideal for use at feeding time on your baby’s hands and face;
• Great for all the family as a freshen-up wipe.

THE PACKAGING

The wipes come in a light green and white packet, with little ducks on, which are a lighter shade of green. There is a small lid in the centre of the pack where you remove the wipes.

OPENING THE PRODUCT

As I mention above, these have a small, white, hard plastic lid, which you open to remove your wipes. There are two small clips on either side of the lid, which holds it securely in place when closed.

The first time you go to use the wipes, you will find a security seal sticky label underneath the lid, which covers the hole that the wipes come out of. After you remove this you can just lift the lid, pull out the wipes and then snap the lid closed again.

I found this to be a big plus because with other wipes that use the re sealable plastic bit to cover the hole, once opened I would always have to throw away the first one or two wipes every time I went to use them, because they had dried out. I found that with the Asda wipes the lid meant that each wipe was moist enough to use. This meant that not only was I saving money because they were half the price, I was also saving because I didn’t have to throw any away.

TRYING THE PRODUCT

I pull out a wipe and have a look at it. Even though they are cheaper than other wipes, they are still the same size.

I find them very moist and they feel very soft indeed. They are also quite strong. It took a fair amount of pulling on my part to make this wipe start to tear.

Now to start testing them on Chloe. I try them first on her face to remove the remains of the Weetabix she had for breakfast – one wipe and it’s all gone. Now the ultimate test – changing the nappy. Chloe has been prone to a bit of nappy rash, so I don’t want to buy wipes to use that are cheaper, if they will aggravate the nappy rash. I use the wipes on her. She doesn’t cry or anything, which is a good sign and I clean her up no problem.

OTHER USES

Seeing as these were fine for the purpose I bought then for, I decided to see how they stood upto some other testing.

First of all I tried them on Gareth. He’d had his paints out and his hands, face and the table were a bit of a mess. I used some of the wipes and they cleaned him up easily enough and also removed the paint off the table.

I’ve tried them on myself to remove make up and it came off easily, without the stinging sensation I sometimes get when using other products.

I’ve even used them on the dog!!

OTHER INFORMATION

The ingredients are listed on the back of the packet so I won’t mention them here, unless someone would like me to. If so then please let me know and I will add them in.

Something I will mention is that even though I have used these to remove make up, the pack does warn you to avoid contact with eyes. You also have to throw them out with the rubbish – you cannot flush them down the loo!!

One thing I did think was good to know is that Asda is against animal testing and they also fund research into alternatives.

The pack also advised you that this product is safe for use up to six months after opening – As if the pack lasts that long in our house!!

MY OPINION

I have used a few packs of these wipes now. Taking into consideration what I’ve said so far they sound brilliant don’t they? To be fair they are, but I personally found one problem with them.

I found that when I get about halfway down the packet, it is sometimes difficult to pull out a single wipe. Instead I find that two or three come out together.

It’s not really a problem when you are changing a nappy or cleaning the children, as you tend to use more than one anyway. I found it a bit of a pain if I wanted just one to clean my hands with, as you either have to throw the others that have come out away or stuff them back through the hole into the packet to use next time.

To be fair it doesn’t always happen, so it may just be the way I pull them out. As I already said it isn’t really a problem and it certainly wouldn’t put me off buying them, I just thought I would mention it so you are aware before you buy them.

Apart from this small problem, I have no other complaints. I found these wipes strong, soft and were moist all the way through the packet. So far I have not had to throw away a single wipe because it had dried out.

They were easy to use and wiped any dirt off easily. Most importantly they were gentle enough to use on Chloe when changing her nappy, and didn’t play up the nappy rash at all.

WOULD I RECOMMEND

Yes I would. I find them good value for money, especially when buying the pack of four, which then works out at less than a pound a packet.

The only reason that I didn’t give these wipes five stars was because sometimes more than one wipe would come out. This is only a small problem and with the amount of money I can save by using these, is one I can live with.
