Advantages: Cheaper than other brands.

Disadvantages: Every nappy has to be checked for sharp paper grit in the waistband and leg cuffs.

One of the most popular ways to survive the credit crunch is to drop down a brand on the goods we buy and probably the most common way to do this is to buy the shops own brand of goods rather than the TV advertised commercially well-known brands. It made sense to me to use shops own brands of nappies, considering what they are used for, it's not like I was going to lose out on taste quality or add any nasty preservatives of colourants into the family diet!

So, I've been trying a range of shops own nappies on littlest HonestBob. Most have proved fantastic. Some have leaked at night.

Asda's Little Angels nappies have been devilishly awful.

My first complaint is that they leak at the waistband. Littlest HonestBob sleeps on his front in a kneeling position (yes, it looks as uncomfortable as it sounds and I do roll him over every night before I go to bed, only to watch him reposition himself as I leave the room). This sleep position means that urine gathers at the top of his nappy and when the top front capacity of the nappy has been reached the wee leaks out onto his vest, pj's and bed sheets rather than seeping downwards in the nappy. We only have this problem with Asda's Little Angels nappies as other brands (including other shops own brands) seem to have more absorbancy at waistband level.

My second complaint is regarding manufacturing quality and I have returned a pack of nappies to Asda for this problem previously. During manufacturing some tiny gritty grains of paper product get lodged in the waisband and leg section of the nappy. These tiny gritty bits can be felt if you run your fingers over the thinner areas of the nappy. Some of the nappies are grit free, some have only 3 or 4 tiny gritty grains but some have 15-20 tiny sharp lumps. These must feel incredibly irritating against babies skin. With the pack that I returned, one nappy actually kept littlest HonestBob awake and I found him whining and squirming in his cot. I took the nappy off expecting a nasty present from littlest HonestBob but soon realised he'd been wrapped in a nappy containing half a dozen gritty grains which were rubbing his back and tummy. The little grains can be removed by picking at them, but this is time-consuming and should not be necessary.
The only brand of nappies I have had this problem with before was a brand called 'Nannys' that I purchased whilst in Cyprus, no other shops own brand I've used in the UK has produced gritty nappies.

I won't be using these nappy's again even if at £3.97 for 30 size 5 nappies they are cheaper than other brands. I'd rather pay another 3 or 4 pence per nappy and be sure littlest HonestBob is comfortable and I won't need to wash his cot sheets every morning.

Summary: Tesco's own brand are much better

Aaaah, poor baby. Grit in your knickers is no fun at all!! One of my cherubs used to sleep in that position too - almost as uncomfortable to look at as these nappies sound.
