Advantages: Easy to use, does what it says
Disadvantages: None
Smooth as a baby's bottom
I am not really a great advocate of creams for babies' bottoms but there are occasions when I find I have to use something to ease the irritation. Generally I change the nappy often and in between changes leave the nappy off and let my baby kick his legs for a while which he enjoys very much and also allows his bottom to be exposed to the fresh air.
My son is now nearly six months old and I am on my second tube of Bepanthen nappy care ointment. Most of the time I don't need to use anything on his bottom but I find that now he is cutting his teeth his bum does break out with a slight nappy rash. For me I wash his bottom in cooled boiled water, dry it, let the air at it for a while then apply Bepanthen immediately before I put on his nappy. I usually find by the next change the redness is gone, but I carry out the same routine, usually for the 24-hour period.
I first came across Bepanthen as a freebie in I think a Bounty pack. I used the cream and when it was done didn't buy it again, this was with my first child. Again I got a free sample when I had my second child and again I didn't purchase anymore. I didn't purchase anymore because I had been given a very large tub of Sudocreme, which does a very similar job. However with my third child I sat down and actually read about the cream and looked at the instructions. The cream is not an antiseptic cream and is not recommended for nappy rash that is infected, more for the rash that is red and not broken down. I decided I would go with the Bepanthen rather than use Sudocreme. Sudocreme is more medicated.
According to the leaflet with the cream it works in 2 ways:
1. It seals in the skin's natural moisture, providing optimal conditions to allow gentle skin recovery without drying out your baby's delicate skin.
2. It works by forming a long lasting, transparent layer, protecting even the most delicate skin from irritants and rubbing.
My experience of this product is a very good experience and I do really like it. I find the cream is very easy to apply it is not runny or sticky and a little bit does seem to go quite a long way. Once applied it does not slip off easily and I don't get it all over my hands or clothes when applying it. There is no real fragrance from it; it smells a bit like some sort of grease. Whilst I have been using the product I have not found any after-effects, my son's skin seems to heal well and it does not cause him any irritation. Bepanthen is actually an ointment not a cream which probably explains why it is easy to apply and not messy. I will continue to use Bepanthen, obviously I hope not too often but I definitely will buy it again.
I usually buy the 30g tube and the last tube, bought in Boots, cost me £2.99. It is available in a larger 100g size.
