My new baby goes through nappies like they're going out of fashion, and her overactive insides mean that she's had a red bottom a few times.

I already knew about Bepanthen because I've used it in the past to speed along the healing of tattoos - it works astonishingly well to clear the redness and prevent itching and scabbing. I bought a 30g tube of Bepanthen for the monster's bottom (£2.98 in either Lloyd's or Boots, I don't remember). You can also buy it in 100g containers but I didn't see how much they cost.

The ingredients are, Aqua, Lanolin, Paraffinum liquidum, Petrolatum, Panthenol (Dexpanthenol), Prunus dulcis, Cera alba, Ceetyl alcohol, Stearyl alcohol, Ozokerite, Glyceryl oleate, Lanolin alcohol.

The cream must also be stored in a cool dry place below 25 degrees C.

It's very oily when you first put the cream on, but the screaming stopped almost instantly, and at the next nappy change the redness was reduced and the monster seemed much happier about the whole process of changing. The trend continued until the redness was completely gone - it took less than two days.

Since it has paraffin in it, I wouldn't use Bepanthen as a preventative for nappy rash, only if she already has it. But it works quickly and gets rid of the discomfort. Wonderful.

Summary: Fast-acting relief from nappy rash and good for new tattoos too!
