The use of nappies is essential for small children who have not yet learnt to use the toilet or potty day and night. In my parents day it was an easy choice, which towelling squares would you buy. The decision was based on price and quality. Now the choice of nappies is mind-boggling. First you have to decide what type of nappies you want to use. Will it be reusable nappies or disposable? If it is reusable will it be all in one type or will you use some sort of pants with a pad in them? When my oldest daughter was born the choice was not so great and I used the towelling square. Most of my contemporaries used disposable nappies, as they are very good, but no good for the environment! I am pleased to note that nowadays more of the mothers with young children I know use reusable nappies! Since my youngest child came along 15 months ago I decided to have another look at what was available. As I had lots of towelling squares I was using them and I have found an excellent type of pants to use them with, I wrote my op in the reusable nappies in general section called 'Weenees by Eenees Design'. As an extra nappy for emergency use I bought a boots all in one nappy. This comprises of a waterproof outer with an absorbent inner. There is a flap of material, which is folded in different ways for boys and girls. All you have to do is fold the flap, put in a nappy liner for all those horrible fillings, and use the Velcro to put these on. These nappies are quick and easy to use. The tests that must be done on a nappy include absorbency, wash-ability, dry-ability, and ease of use. I have now had this nappy to comment on each of these factors. As far as absorbency is concerned I have been very happy, there have been no leaks and it has be excellent for overnight use when the nappy is worn longer and is often wetter than other times. As for wash-ability, I like to was nappies at a high temperature for hygienic r
easons, unfortunately these nappies can not be washed at high temperatures due to the outer waterproof coating however they wash well in a normal wash coming our clean and ready to use again. The biggest problem comes with the dry-ability, these nappies are very good at absorbing lots of moisture and so when they are washed they hold a lot of water to be removed. I have been using my boots nappy over winter when the weather is not so great and so I have been hanging it in the house. I have found that it has taken 2 days to dry the nappy while towelling squares and the pants I have been using have been dry within 1 day. This means that if you rely on this type of nappy you are going to need quite a few as each time the nappy is changed it will be 2 days at least before it can be reused and that relies on them being washed straight away. As for ease of use I can not fault my boots nappy. These nappies are quick and easy to put on they stay on well and do not seem to leak. They are good to put in your changing bag if you are going out as you only have one thing to put on and they do not take up much room. One of these nappies costs £7 which may seem quite a lot but if they are used on a regular basis they can soon pay for themselves. I believe that using this type of nappy will be useful when potty training as the child will be able to remove it to go to the potty!

- 11/02/02 I love your op. and up until now I hadn't really considered a reusable nappy. My eldest is just two years old and I am trying to potty-train him as we speak, er, I mean write. I think if I get one of these it will work out more cost-effective because these days he uses more nappies, not because he's peeing and pooing more, but because he's learnt how to undo them! I will give 'em a go!!
