Advantages: Very economical, so lovely to use, don't leak, great colour choices... need I go on?
Disadvantages: Absolutely none!
I used OneLife reusables with my first baby, and couldn't fault them bar the fact that they were a little too bulky. I researched slim fit nappies for my second baby and tried a few different types until I came across these nappies.
You can buy these one size nappies with aplix (velcro) or poppers. I have half velcro and half poppers and can honestly say there is no difference. They both work just as well. They fasten just like a disposable, and have elastic around the legs and back bit to ensure a good fit. The front folds down and poppers in place to make a smaller nappy for younger babies on both the velcro and popper versions. They are on size, so last from birth to potty training.
They need a microfibre insert inside to soak up the wee, and also a flushable, bio- degradable liner which sits on top of the insert. The liners are relatively cheap to buy from many places, including Mothercare. I currently use PHP (Perfectly Happy People) ones which cost about £5.00 for 200. And no, they haven't blocked my toilet or my drains!
The inserts for these nappies are really good because they last from birth to potty training. They have fold down indents on them in sizes 1- 3, so you can fold them for smaller babies, then as the baby grows, unfold them. The inserts are a lovely, fleecy material and beige in colour.
The nappy itself comes in a HUGE variety of different colours; I currently have blue and beige ones.
I find I use two nappies and four inserts a day, so the washing isn't too much to keep up with. I have purchased a pail in which to soak the nappies anyway, as doing laundry every day is sometimes not feasible with a new baby and a five year old! I just bought Bambino Mio nappy soak and a Tots Bots bucket in which to put the nappies in. You don't need to change the nappy itself each time you do a nappy change, as they are waterproof, you can just clean them out with water and kitchen roll.
You can buy these nappies and inserts separately, in packs of one, or as a 'day kit.' I bought two day kits, which cost me about £80 in total. These were from Amazon. In a day kit, you get two nappies and six inserts. I also bought a few nappies (new) from eBay.
I have already made back my money as I was paying about £20 a month on disposable nappies and nappy sacks combined. Therefore, I truly believe that you do save money by using reusables, as well as saving the environment. OK, there is the extra washing, but I was the nappies and inserts with my son's bibs and muslins; sounds gross but on a 90 degrees wash it's all boil washed and sterilised so very hygienic.
I use a normal non- bio detergent and no softener when I wash these nappies. The inserts still come out lovely and soft, and the nappies come out almost dry; I guess they should being waterproof! I also tumble dry the inserts if I need them urgently.
Do they work? Yes, in a word. I have not had ONE leak, no word of a lie. They fit my son perfectly, and never have gaps. Nor do they fit too tightly and leave him with big, angry welts on his little (but oh so chubby!) legs. They are not fiddly to put on; even my hubbie can manage them! My son has never had nappy rash; whether that's down to the nappies or not, I'm not sure, but I would guess it is. These nappies are even great t use overnight; they don't get ridiculously wet and do not leak.
these nappies are not bulky at all. My son is four and a half months old, therefore is in 3- 6 months clothes. These nappies don't make him need the next size up as some other reusable nappies do. he doesn't look like he has a deformed bottom, and you can't see the nappies through his clothes either.
These reusable nappies are great for first- time reusable users. They are easy to use, easy to wash and all round brilliant!
Summary: Brilliant all round nappy that will see your child through from birth to potty- training
